This is for a 1995, 2wd, auto trans., 3.0 liter XLT Ranger. There was a thread a while back that went into lengthy detail about changing your key lock switch. I believe they said a replacement could be purchased at Autozone for a reasonable price with keys. Also I believe it was said that with some care you could even end up using your present ignition keys. Does anyone know when Ford started using ignition keys with chips in them? I don't think mine has any, because I had a spare key made at the hardware store and it works fine in the ignition. My key lock mechanism seems to be quite worn and loose and I was thinking of replacing it.
It is posible to replace the lock cylinder and cut the door lock cuts on the new key. There are 5 different lock cylinders, you match the lock cylinder to the 6th cut on the original key and have the remaining cuts put on the new key.
Thanks RClarke. I'm afraid you're over my head with this key thing. Are you saying that I could match the door lock key to the ignition key? And if that's the case do I have to take it to a locksmith to have the keys cut? I was just hoping to use my old ignition key since I have several. My knowledge is limited when it comes to locks. I know with my house I was able to match all the locks to one key by replacing the tumblers and filing them down smooth with the key inserted. Point of fact......this all started when I inadvertenly inserted my door lock key into the ignition lock and started the truck. I realized my error when a number of the dash panel lights came on and my turn indicators wouldn't work. So it gives one an idea how badly my ignition lock is worn. I think even a screwdriver would work in my ignition lock.
