6.0 trans cooler

i am picking up a 6.0 PSD transmission cooler for cheap. it is out of a truck that was rear-ended and the drivetrain was in perfect shape.

i want to put it in my 1996 F350 with e4od and 5.8 motor. the truck has the towing package so it has the stock trans cooler - like 7 or 9 rows. this 6.0 cooler is massive and has 31 rows. i would remove the stock cooler and put this one in its place.

i don't tow much, but i do snowplow a lot with this truck. i have a trans temp guage in the test port of the e4od and sometimes see temps as high as 190 degrees, at which point i put the truck in low range and that cools the trans right down.

my only fear is that this massive 6.0 cooler actually cools my e4od too much - is that even possible? i want it to be at an optimal running temperature - not to hot, not too cold...

i have to imagine there are plenty of 6.0's out there that are babied and never tow or plow, so i'm sure ford wouldn't put a cooler on a truck that wouldn't allow the trans to reach operating temp - unless the 5R110 thats behind the 6.0's is designed to run at a lower temperature than an e4od?

i just want to be sure i think this through and am not doing any harm by installing a 6.0 trans cooler. i know the e40d's hate heat - even moreso than other automatic transmissions. what are your thoughts? thanks!

E40D's don't hate heat more so than other automatic transmissions.why do you say that?
your operating temps peaking at the test port of 190F are near perfect brother.you want the atf to warm up and burn off the condensation.milky atf is no good.you can run up 220F all day if you wanted.i run a 180F thermal bypass so my trans temps are 190F all the time.
you need to remember the super duty trucks are rated for much more than our old trucks and you have a very high volume pump in your '96 that cools the trans great by pumping high volume through the cooler.
a 6.0 trans cooler would over cool your trans.it wouldn't come up to proper operating temp without a thermal bypass in which you'd just run at your current peak temps again anyway.then with the more cooler shedding heat on your radiator, your engine wont cool as good as it would without the massive cooler.

the reason the 4R100 owners (E40D with a new name) like the 6.0 coolers on their super duty trucks,is because they changed the way the pump works.when their converter lock, their pumps "flow as needed" and the pump slows down and the temps rise.our pumps, pump like a mother (especially your '95 + "F5" code pump) when our converters lock up.i know when plowing they wont lock up,but at 190F peaks, your golden as is.

ok - glad i asked..... in my research i came across quite a few 94-97 trucks with the e4od and 7.3 psd running the 6.0 cooler. they all comment how it keeps the trans much cooler (as you would expect), but i didn't know if that was necesarily a good thing.....

and running at 220 all day? i always heard 190'ish was approaching the danger zone. you seem very knowledgeable on the e4od, but everything i've ever heard or read was that you're in trouble if over 200....

nah 200F @ the test port isn't anything to be alarmed about.iv never seen up over 210 i don't think with mine with the tru-cool aux coolers.if you ever see it go above 225F then just stop plowing and head down the road to get the converter to lock.within a mile she'd shed it all and you get right back to plowing again.

thanks for the input. i'll still pick the cooler up, but am having serious second thoughts about installing it...

anyone else have a take on the subject? i want to get as many perspectives as possible. who has actually put a 6.0 cooler on an e4od? whats your normal operating temp?
