Going to the dark side ...

I found a 1848 Holley for a good price and decided to buy it. Is there anything I need to know when rebuilding? Do the throttle shafts wear out? Should I check for that? Is just a simple rebuild kit all I need?

I'll have it as back up.

I know for me, whenever I get a used carb with an unknown age/condition, I simply buy a new base plate. It's a little expensive (about $100), but it's about the only part of a carb a rebuild won't fix, and worn throttle shafts cause nightmares.

There are nylon sleeves that come in rebuild kits for throttle shafts, but I've never had much luck with them, and have read most others don't either.

Other than that, just pull it apart, clean it up, and put it back together with the new stuff. Nothing fancy aside from just remembering where everything goes. Holleys are very screw/bolt in place and nothing really moves. Aside from the idle and such, adjustments are done by changing parts, so there's not a lot things you can accidentally mess up.

Just keep track of the check ball / weight underneath the accelerator pump squirter. =P
