300-i6 with auto trans?

Considering options to power my 71 f100 swb. Originally had planned on v-8 and a c6 or c4 automatic trans. However, would this work ok with a 300?
I plan to add an aftermarket a/c and power steering later. I may have better access to a 300 than a v8 locally.

C6 would work well with the 300. C4 probably wouldn't hold up well to the torque the 300 puts out.

C4: 1965/74 F100/250 240/300 / 1965/72 F350 240 / 1969/74 E100/300 240/300 / 1975/77 & some 1978/79 F100/250 300.

1978 was the first year that the C6 was available with 300 I-6, but the C4 was also available.

Serving suggestion: Do the extra work and spend an extra buck or two on an '88-'93 AOD from behind a V8 or out of a truck. More gears more better. The 300 being a low RPM motor, having more gears and an OD will pay off in less noise, lower cruise revs, and a little better mpg's.

ymmv, jmo, good luck with it.

And yes, we all know the C6 is King, the C4 will take 800 HP if you build it right, and they are both cheaper than the AOD, which in early years was a terrible POS.

The C4 was offered from the factory with the 300 and it worked just fine. The C4 is also a popular transmission among drag racers. It can handle the job. It's smaller and weighs a little bit less. You also won't need to fumble around trying to find a C6 with a small block bell housing. I don't see any reason why you'd want a C6 over a C4, especially if you rebuild it with Kevlar bands, Kolene plates, and Raybestos clutches. Then it'll stand up to anything you throw at it.

There is no need for that kind of attitude here. Stop or go elsewhere.

Came across this setup. Has a c6 granny. The poster sent me a video of it running. Sounded good. I know it's not a 300, but is one of the other options I had in mind.

I apologize. I was not trying to give off any attitude with that comment. I was just retracting my previous opinion because I realized I didn't know all the facts. Again, I am sorry if I offended anyone and I sure would hate to have to leave this forum.

What exactly was the point of this comment? Not exactly very welcoming.

It seemed to me as if he was coming off a little aggressive. Maybe he didn't mean to. It happens. I've done it before. He apologized. I'll apologize. Let's put it behind us.

Well glad you guys sorted out that. I kind of thought mtphammer was just saying essentially, "darn, I didn't know that."
Well my 360 option was sold. I have a lead about 300 miles from here with a 351W (but fuel injected).
I am not coming across a lot of 300s, but will continue my quest.
Still, what has gone kind of unanswered is whether or not the 300 with an auto (c4 or c6, perhaps AOD,but don't like the extra complexity) would serve me well as a daily driver with a/c, power steering, etc.
I am too dang conservative to want to waste money burning rubber (although it is nice to know I can). I burned enough rubber through college - 68 Torino GT, 71 F100 with 390 or 360, 72 Corvette, 81 Mercury Capri with 302 HO, etc.
Can you guys with engine knowledge tell anything just by looking at the pictures with this craigs list listing:
http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/pts/4732747575.html
This is only 30 miles away. The owner does not know much about the engine except it was running before it was removed from wrecked truck.
Also, can someone advise me of the things I need to move forward with swapping out engine/tranny for a auto-trans, power steering? I know I need a new steering column, power steering pump, bracket, but this task looks like it could be pretty daunting.

Committed to buy a c4

Well I told a guy on CL today, I would buy a C4 he has.
And I am pretty sure, I am going to stay with an in-line on the truck. Still pondering having the 240 rebuilt or buying a 300 that has been rebuilt.
Will be picking up a HF Crane/Engine lift as well:
1 Ton Capacity Foldable Shop Crane
