Shifting curiosities

Hey fellas, got a curiosity for ya, on my '00 7.3, i having trouble maintaining my torque when accelerating and towing as well. when its cold its shift great i can take off and watch every gear hold till about the 2500rpm range but as it warms up, it will start shifting what i consider too soon, it'll hold first hold second til 2400 then its pretty much just dives for fourth only holding through third gear literally only long enough to shift up. It can be a real pain pulling out into traffic when i need to get up and go and it dives to 1500 rpm and pretty much stops. any suggestions onto what i could check at home ( i don't really have any super diagnostic equipment but may can get access to some ) at least where i need to start?

I have heard of some kind of vacuum line that leaks back fluid that could cause issue but not exacty sure of what it looks like or where could it is exactly

The 4r100 does not have a vacuume modulator, it's electronic. Does your o/d off light flash all all? Does your speedometer and cruise work ok? Have you checked for codes?

No lights and no codes when last checked, the od on off button works kinda as it should (have to wiggle the gear selector a little bit to get the light to come on and off right ) speedo and cruise working fine.

Cold shifting is going to be different, quite a few things happening within the calibration engine/tranny-wise to cause changes in acceleration, shift points, etc based on temperatures.

With that said, some calibrations also have a different torque converter lockup strategy and slight changes to shift points that becomes apparent when towing. At the right pedal positions the TC can lock up earlier, and the 2-3 and 3-4 upshift feels like it's at way too low RPM. I've experimented with a few of these strategies while towing in the mountains, some are a real PITA to drive with.

Just something to keep in mind for this thread. There very well could be nothing wrong with the truck at all, just the programming that's commanding the shifts and TC lockup is to blame.

yea i didn't expect it to be anything mechanical, i just don't remember it always being like that, used to tow a camper around in its younger days, used to be on a 2 hour commute several times a week. seems like it was after the 125k mile mark. could just be me. may look into sprucing it up a bit to gain back some bottom end

OP- How is trans fluid ? Do you have an aftermarket valvebody.

I have TWICE been fooled into thinking I was on the verge of needing to replace the transmission in my Excursion. The "slippage" I would feel was only when the engine was under load (very steep hill climbs, low speed, 1st-2nd shift slippage). BOTH times it ended up being plugged fuel lines between the tank and the pump!!

check your intercooler pipes for dirt or soot by the boots,i had similar issues and turned out to be a leaking boot i was so convinced it was trans problem i called Brian's truck Shop,Brian got on the phone had me drive while i told what it was doing,shifting and what rpm's and he called it,got a new boot and back to normal.A couple years later I called again and again he diagnosed it over the phone and this time it was a solenoid pack, he sent me a used solenoid pack only charged me for shipping and would not take a dime more.I wanted to pay him for diagnosing the problem and he would not have it.It might be worth a call to him,he is a great guy.I'm still running on that solenoid pack and its 3 years later.

there is decent buildup around all of my boots quite possibly it is time to replace with 290k on them....
