Good evening Pat.

I had a day to try and catch up on some stuff today, then I was interrupted with work and the day is done.

Good evening Pat.

I drove my 62 for around 7 miles yesterday. Parked in the garage and noticed oil pouring out the rear main seal...

Good morning Pat!

Glad you had a nice day on your day off.

The trans in the 62 is covered in gunk, I really don't want to put a rear main in.

It would yes.

Do you happen to know of chance if the rear main is changeable without dropping the pan and removing the rear main cap? I know some older engines the rear main seal is held in a groove by the rear main cap or something of the like.

The rear end also hums at speeds above 30mph'ish'. The hum changes with the gas pedal too. I checked the oil and it was low, I am sure the bearings if not all of it are pretty well toast.

I have a 9" in storage that I have been saving for my mustang. I wouldn't waste it on the 62 but I would maybe swap the current rear from the stang to the 62 and just set the stang on the 9" for now to roll it around. But that is allot of work and I believe the stang rear is to wide for the comet anyhow.

Man the delemas.

170 I6 it is the original and I don't believe it has ever been apart. Car has 72,000 miles on it but yet everything seems to be worn. I don't think it was maintained well.

Doing some quick searching I see the seals listed are a split seal which means rear main cap has to come off...

I really don't know much at all about the I-6's. From the sound of it, you may be taking it apart either way, if the bearings are headed south.

The more I am thinking about it the more I am thinking of yanking it and dropping in a small v8 and different trans. I can keep the original motor and trans around if at some point I sell the car and the new owner wants original stuff yet.

Oh yeah, good morning Pat! I finally get a day off!

Good morning Andy! If you don't want to mess with that motor, I would think that would be the way to go.

Raining to beat the band here this morning.
