I've got a 1988 F 150 4 wheel drive 4.9 5 speed.when I'm spinning the rear tires and they grab traction the whole truck shakes and starts bucking, the shifter go side to side 5 to 6 inches.and when I say shakes its violent.I've had several of these trucks and this is the fort to do it . I thought it was either motor mounts or tranny mounts but I've checked them and they appear fine .. what gives.?
How many leafs in the rear suspension and are any of them cracked? Is the truck stock or lifted? If the truck has 2.5" wide springs or only the 3 leaf pack they're much too soft and are allowing the axle to wrap, solutions include adding more leafs or traction bars.
.the rear end doesn't move in the main issues the 4 wheel drive shifter in the gear shifter going side to side when the tires rotate when traction is broke
if your shifter is goin all over the place, its likely your engine mounts are bad. expect your trans mount to be destroyed too. pretty easy to test them; in layman terms, get under there and push on stuff.
My truck does the same, has a broken motor mount and a tranny mount on it's way out the 4.9 is known for shredding motor mounts. Something about them being to soft I beleive
