when hit the gas in my truck and shift from first to second, the shifter seems to move side to side excessively. feels like the tranny is twisting too much. is this normal? i just had a new clutch put in, and i dont remember it doing this beforehand. if the tranny mounts are bad, wouldnt the mechanic have said something when he put the clutch in? any ideas?1992 f150 5spd w/ the i6.
i crawled underneath and tried to tighten everything down, but everthing was tight as hell. are the tranny mounts the rubber gromments directly under the back of the tranny? those seem brand new, and they are very snug. i dont know how to check the motor mounts, though. could bad shocks cause this problem?
I wouldn't worry about the shocks, its most likely the motor mounts. It could be normal twisting but if it's a bad mount it will twist excessivly. You might not be able to see if the mount is bad if it's sitting back down on itself but it can twist and pick itself up off of the mount (I know that it is like this on other cars and trucks but i'm not sure about the Ford trucks). You can test them by lifting the hood and holding the brakes while you try to go forward and backward. You have to apply enough pressure that you don't physically move the truck just torque the motor. Make sure you block the wheels or chain yourself to a tree or something big for safety so that your sure the truck doesn't move, or if you have a buddy watching the engine, you don't run him over. The main thing is to be safe!!! You might also be able to get in between the frame and exhaust manifold with a big pry bar and try to move the engine. You might also want to check the bellhousing bolts just to be sure that it's not moving there which would be terribly bad. Hope this helps. Let us know what you find.
i locked my e brake and went forwards and backwards while having a buddy look at my engine. it really didnt move much. ill have to take a better look at it, but i dont think the mounts are bad. any other suggestions are more than appreciated. thanks for all the help so far.

Do everything jimjoebob said, but be mindful that one of the rubber tranny mounts could have torn, but (as said above) be sitting back down where it's supposed to be, (so it looks normal) when not under load. Try to torque the mounts every which way with a pry bar, as stated.
Also, make sure the tranny's crossmember got bolted back to the frame, and isn't just sitting there (though I suspect you would have heard it, were that the case).
Drive with a buddy, (no radio/heater/AC going) and listen for any unusual noises when this happens.
You're not experiencing an engine misfire, right? Because that can cause things to rock 'n roll, too. Maybe the tech knocked a plug wire loose? Just an idea....
Is your drive shaft two-piece or one? I was wondering if the carrier bearing got loose (if it has one)?
Good luck and let us know--something doesn't seem right.
sorry to bring back the post, but i had my truck in for inspection so i asked my mechanic to take a look at the motor mounts. he said none of the mounts are broken, but that they are "tired". can worn mounts cause some extra movement? how hard would it be to install new mounts myself? i can get all 3 for 108 dollars shipped to my door.
also- it is a one peice drive shaft. no strange noises except for a very loud throw out bearing even though my clutch is a week old .
another way to check motor mounts is use a jack and a 2x4 , that's how i lifted the motor in my pickup to change out the motor mount. the other thing to check is if the nut has come loose on the driver's side motor mount.( mine comes loose from time to time)
how hard would it be to install new mounts myself?
Pretty easy, just make sure you don't set the engine down on your finger. All you would need is the jack and 2x4, like 892504x4 said, or a cherry picker, a decent set of tools and some time. Put a little bit of pressure on the engine with either the cherry picker or the jack under the oil pan with the 2x4 on top of the jack cradle, not too much, but enough to hold the weight and loosen the bolts. It's pretty self explainatory at that point. One in, one out and so on. Do only one at a time to make sure that the engine doesn't walk excessivly away from where it mounts up. Should be pretty straight forward with the tranny mount also, but you have to use the jack on this one. Well unless you have a huge hole in your floorboard. lol. If you need any more help, you can just give us a shout back! Good luck!
i really appreciate all the help. i think i am going to install new motor mounts myself. i found a site that seems to have a good deal. Auto Parts Warehouse - Shopping Cart
