2001 sport trac... 104,000miles 4x4 low no workie
2WD and 4wd high work and the dash light works and you here the click
and the tires bite when you turn so I know the mechanics of it work...
Why does nothing happen when I go to 4x4 LOW no click no light..
fuse? relay? solenoid of some sort....
trying to trade it in or sell it and it really hurts the value..
any help would be great thanks

in reading posts about this...
I see brake switch might be issue....
is that also why the "put your seatbelt on" light and chime keep alarming when I am sitting in park? switch bad and not getting signal to tell 4X4 low to kick in???
gonna test to see if brake pedal turns off cruise control to make sure its working
gonna test it

you have an electric motor on the transmission transfer case that shifts into two different gears for HI and LO.. Either the motor is bad, stuck, or no power to it.. this is what it looks like below.

OK thanks....going to pick up the motor right now..... Is there a fuse or relay that I need to check? and where located?
. I took off old motor and used vice grip to manually move the transfer case to 4H and 4L.. but going to 4L it seemed to not want to go and then finally did.. no, I did not force it just gentle trys...so I exercised it a few times and then put it back in 2H position but had to put truck in Neutral to get it to go back there. re installed motor and still only have 2H and 4H no 4L. Advance told me if the new motor does not fix it just bring it back for a refund... so its worth the shot... plan on trading this truck in this week and need every dollar I can get for it, so $65 may make a big difference if the used car appraiser finds the 4L not working and drops trade value like $1000....wish me luck...

NEED HELP 4x4
Well I replaced the transfer case motor... and IT DID NOT FIX IT.... ugh
what else could it be?? what plug pins do I verify power on?
a fuse? a relay? where located to check?
can I take motor back off and manually turn the shaft to to 4Low and verify that it works mechanically how do I know it is actually in 4 low ?
guessing it will run differently....
any help would be great

on our explorer it take a try or two to get into 4 low. when you are shifting into 4 low push the button, transmission must be in neutral (you didn't state you did that) and occasionally I have to release the brake and re apply the brake, then click it will go in. it seems to wana bind up and needs the drive train to release a bit to go in.
you should be able to detach the motor from the transfer case and watch it when you switch to 4low and see if it moves. it may not but worth a try, there is a switch in the transfer case that says its in 4x4 then go on to 4x4low. I have not looked at wiring diagram in a while.
I bet its just sticking and motor doesn't wana pull it in first try so it defaults to nothing.

I just found the owners manual I went to the dash fuse box and the under hood box for the ones marked 4x4 in the books description they are all not blown....
????????????? looks like there are 2 relays but nobody carries them ... special order...
both kinda pricey and I don't know where they are located.....

if the truck goes into 4x4 from two wheel drive it is not an electrical problem with the actuator. the actuator is a simple electric motor that drives a worm gear with gear reduction to move the actuator in the t-case. it either moves in one direction or the other using two wires, it basicly switches the ground and positive to move the motor one way and sitches them to move it the other way. there may be a sensor or two in the t-case or shift motor. if the motor moves from 2wd to 4wd then the system is working. from 4wd to 4l is just another turn of the motor. you never stated if you are putting the truck into neutral before shifting from 4x4 to 4low?

Yes I am putting it in Neutral...
I ended up giving up and took it to the dealer and.... TRADED IT IN
I was only expecting to get $3000 in trade but they came back at $4500!!
I now own a 2011 F350 Supercab Lariat Diesel 4x4 with 28000 miles on it.
The Sport Trac did give me a GREAT! 14 years of service
thanks for all the help on this... I didn't fix it, but I learned a lot.

Sport Trac was originally my wifes in 2001, then all the sudden it was 12 years old with low miles and my daughter turned 16 and it was a cheap reliable ( already paid off) 1st car for her... I have now handed down my 2005 crown vic police interceptor to her and I got the F350. I had an F250 b4 and due to wifes cancer medicals bills had to sell it. I was looking for th an F250 but the deal on this F350 was too good to pass... the moonshot I got for the sprot trac in trade and any other F350 like this is $40000 plus I paid $ around $35000.. State farm said if I total it today they would value it at $42000... hope that makes sense... Plus big trucks is kinda a fireman thing...lol
