4wd will not engage
2001 sport trac. When I turn the **** to engage either 4wd high or low all I get is a hum from the solenoid on the transfer case. Neither light, 4wd high or 4wd low, on the instrument panal lights up. Any ideas on the problem. Every ones in a while the 4wd will ingage but when you turn it off and right back on you may have the same problem.

I have a 93 Ranger that does the same thing every now and then. All I do to fix it is tap the shift motor on the transfer case with a rubber mallet a few times, not too hard but not softly either. I seem to only have this problem when I go a while without using 4 wheel drive. I try to use it at least a few minutes a week just to keep things moving. I think my shift motor just gets frozen up. Using the mallet has worked every time. If it doesn't work for you, use a test light and see if you have power at the shift motor. If you do, you may have to replace it. That's my thoughts. Hope this will help.

I found the problem with my Sport Trac. The electric shift motor on the back of the transfer case is sticking and a new motor is about $270-just for the motor no labor. Thanks for the reply.
