ned help please
I am currently working on a friends Ford Flex 2009, 3.8L. It is knocking real bad, and put a code reader on it and it came up with P0022, VVT or VCT valve inop. So I replaced it and it is still knocking real bad on the A Bank. I have searched online and cant find to much info, I Called the dealership and they said bring it in and it will cost me $100 to just diagnose it. I like doing my own work, but I need some guidance please.

“A” Camshaft Position – Timing Over-Retarded
What does the code mean? OBD-ii Code P0022 definition:
A code P0022 definition:the VVT (variable valve timing) or VCT (variable camshaft timing) components and the car’s PCM (powertrain control module, also called an ECM). That consists of a few different components but the P0022 DTC specifically definition:the camshaft (cam) timing. In this case, if the cam timing is over-retarded, the engine light will be illluminated and the code will be set. The “A” camshaft is either the intake, left, or front camshaft.
Symptoms Sumptoms of OBD code P0022
hard starting
poor idle and/or
stalling
There are potentially other symptoms as well. Of course, when trouble codes are set, the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp, a.k.a. the check engine light) illuminates.
Causes Causes of the OBD-II code P0022
Incorrect camshaft timing
Wiring problems (harness/wiring) in intake timing control valve control solenoid system
Continuous oil flow to VCT piston chamber
Failed timing valve control solenoid (stuck open)
Solutions The main thing to check is to verify the operation of the VCT solenoid. You’re looking for a sticking or stuck VCt solenoid valve caused by contamination. Refer to vehicle specific repair manual to perform component tests for the VCT unit. Notes: Dealer techs have advanced tools and the ability to follow detailed troubleshooting steps, including the ability to test components using a scan tool.

we replaced the Solenoid, and we dint check the wiring. it is still knocking real bad on the A Block, I am stuck and the only other option is to take it to ford, thats going to expensive. I took the valve cover off and tried to see if i could see anything. But couldnt and the Head is one solid unit the block. Dam dual over head cams.
