P0016 code

Hey fellas,

My buddy has a 3.5 eco boost and just got this code. Any ideas as to the root of the problem? CEL came on but is currently off. Had loss of power but no symptoms now. Cleared code and waiting to see if it reappears. Any suggestions would help.

Did some research and found it could be related to timing issues. Timing chain stretched possibly. Could be CPS hiccup as he has no other systems related to timing other than power loss for a short period. Keeping an eye on it.

Yup, it likely needs the timing chain replaced. One of these engines' design flaws is having literally only seven teeth on the timing chain tensioner ratchet, making it very easy for it to bottom out to the end of its travel once the timing chain stretches with mileage. When that happens, one of the cams will be out of time just enough to set this code.

I know this thread is a few weeks old, but how many miles are on your buddy's truck?

My 2011 is starting to intermittently show this code, not everyday though. I can re-start it and the symptoms go away. I have 69000 miles on mine. Not sure if repair is worth it, I may just get a new truck.
