Hello everyone, 2004 F-250 6.0 163,000 miles manual transmission, egr delete, straight piped. the last couple of days my exhaust has changed tone . I no longer have the jet engine sound at idle it is much more just a bass sound now. When I am driving and I let off the throttle to shift it sounds like a turbo with a wastegate.I can hear what sounds like the boost blowing off.even if im just cruising down the road and let off the throttle it sounds like it is relieving the boost all at once.i have checked the cac boots and tubes. no holes or splits.i checked the up pipes no sign of soot or leaking.i pulled the turbo off this am and everything looks normal.unison ring and vanes move freely no marks or gouges on wheel no end play or slop on the shaft. is there a way to test the actuator to make sure its working?
Check your VGT solenoid is working. Also check your MAF sensor hose and nipple and your ebp sensor and tube for plugging. Even if the default strategy is being used no signal at all can cause issues.
I just actually made my truck do the same thing, i had surging and unplugged the EBP sensor and it went away. Now no turbo whistle at idle, but turbo still functions normally. Make sure your's is working and connected
ok I just checked the map hose is open. no holes in it the nipple going into the intake is clear.the metal tube on the ebp is clear. I can move the actuator in the turbo by hand, but is there another way to check the electrical side of it to make sure it works? Thank you guys for responding.
alright then, I went back after it and pulled the ebp sensor and it was clogged solid. I cleaned it out and the elbow below it and the tube going back to the exhaust manifold. Tomorrow I will get it all back together and let everyone know if that cured my problem. Thanks again to those who responded. You gotta love the knowledge on this site. I do have a scangauge, but it wont connect with the truck and that's a whole other problem
well I got the turbo back in the truck, everything back together. initial start up sounded good. I could hear the turbo whistle out the exhaust. I will have to get a new ebp sensor Monday. Is it possible the turbo oil seal is shot. I cleaned the cac tubes and boots yesterday and today after about a 20 mile ride there seems to be a good amount of oil residue in the elbow right off the turbo.
By elbow do you mean the cac boot? There will be oil there because of how the crank case vent is routed preturbo. If the turbo seal is bad there will be oil in the downpipe that hooks to your exhaust, well technically it is your exhaust.
Oil in the cac boot/tube is normal. If you lookin just in front of the turbo you will see a hose going into the elbow right after the air filter you will see the crank case vent. This blows oil thru the turbo and it exits those cac boots causing them to deteriorate over time from being oil soaked. If you took the downpipe off of the back of the turbo and oil was there then you would have problems.
Thank you to all who responded! it was the ebp sensor.I got one today at my local Ford dealer and after installing it, I have my jet engine sound back. no more turbo fart ,truck is back to normal. Thanks again.

I am glad you got it fixed. I think I might have the same problem but unfortunately I never heard what the exhaust sounded like before it got upgraded. I can't hear a whistle at idle unless the high idle kicks in. I can hear the turbo whistle from the motor while driving. Does that sound like what was happening to yours? Every once in awhile after start up I can hear an air sucking sound from the motor.
mine would make the turbo fart noise when I let off the throttle.and when I shifted it sounded like the turbo was dumping the boost all at once. you can hear the turbo fart noise if you search you tube.my truck is straight piped so the whistle at idle is very noticeable. try cleaning the Exhaust Back Pressure sensor and the tube that goes to the manifold.i couldn't get the tube to loosen at the manifold so I just disconnected it at the sensor and used a piece of weed trimmer string about 18 inches long. I also checked the MAP sensor hose and fitting on the manifold to make sure they weren't blocked.
