Need help ASAP

I have a 98 Expy with 128k miles on it. In the last few weeks the shifter has been getting really tight and sometimes misses the desired gear (felt like stirring peanut butter).Lately the shifter hasnt been going all the way into park (had to start in neutral) and the truck started to roll when I took my foot off the brake.

Well tonite the shifter broke. Came home from the store with the family, put it in park and shut it off. Thought all was good. It wasnt. After about a minute the truck started to roll so my son jumped in the drivers seat and hit the brake. I took the shifter from park to drive and when I went to go back to park I heard something break and all of a sudden the shifter wasnt connected to anything anymore. So now the truck is sitting in the street stuck in neutral with the key in the ignition

Has anybody else had this happen? Does anyone have an idea of what I need to do to fix this? Really need to fix ASAP as this is a family car.

Is the truck in park now if not the best way to make sure is to remove the cable at trans at this conection is where your problem might lie for slippage adjuster...after you remove cable move the trans leaver to park do make sure its not going to roll over you..Then you need to take the plastic off around the shifter and see if it broke at the column or the pin just gave out. going to have to get a new shifter handle Sounds like something is binding in your shifting linkage..Hope this helps..

Here's a couple areas to look at. Shift cable or loose torx screws.

Good luck

After doing some research tonite it seems this is a common problem with all Ford column shift vehicles. Judging by the symptoms it seems that my shift tube has broken. I guess I wont know for sure until I am able to take the covers off and get a look see.

I had this happen on an expedition and it was a frayed and broken shifter cable at the steering column end.

Does anyone know what the shift tube is made of? Was wondering if it can be welded to get me by for a couple of days

It's a sort of white metal or aluminum.

Ok. All fixed. The shift tube broke right in the middle. Also found the torx bolts at the bottom of the tube had backed out about 1/3. After reassembly the truck works fine but it still feels really sticky when shifting. Guess a shifter cable is next on the agenda.

Thanks for all the help

Did you try lubing it to see if it moves more freely?

Wasn't sure I could do that. Is there a specific way? I'm guessing it's bad down by the trans considering the column end looks brand new

I would access the top of the cable (gravity is your friend) and start with something easy like WD-40 just to see if it helps.
