A Question on Shift Linkage...

Regarding our 1975 F-100 pickup with auto trans on the column... upon arriving home this evening, I went to put the column shift lever in Park, and noticed that the transmission stayed in Drive. I ran the lever back and forth trying to get into Park, but it was obvious that the shift linkage was "slipping" instead of engaging where it was supposed to. I finally had to shut off the ignition with the transmission in Drive (or who knows what gear?) and set the parking brake.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I'm hoping that the linkage has had something come loose on the lower steering column under the dash... the only other option seems to be that something is amiss down on the transmission itself. Since we have a sloped driveway, there is no way I'm crawling under there without the trans in Park, even with the parking brake set. Any experience you could furnish on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Karl

I doubt you have a transmission problem; it is most likely something in the shifter assembly. IF the shifter feels relatively normal, then probably your shifter rod has come loose from the arm on the transmission. If the shifter feels 'loose' and kind of flops around, you have a broken shifter collar. There is the outside chance your shifter tube itself has broken, but that is the least likely of the scenarios. You didn't mention the shifter not feeling right, so I'm betting it's the shifter rod.

You may have to BLOCK the wheels and get under it to at least check it out. If it has come loose under there you will need to do it or pay somebody to do it. What ever you do don't ever trust just the park and no brake set they have been known to break loose inside the trany and roll . I'v never had a Ford do it but a brand X did once and luckily i rolled out of the way , so i don't trust any of them.

Thank you Gentlemen!
The column shifter feels normal... it's not flopping around. It's just that when I pull in the shift lever and move it up (indicator to the left), the "all the way up" position is still in Drive instead of Park. And then when I move the lever back down, the transmission is in a gear that doesn't match what's on the selector... and it changes every time I move the gear lever around so I know the linkage is slipping somewhere.

If the linkage slippage is occurring on the steering column under the dash, then I can safely fix that in the driveway. If the linkage is slipping where it mounts on the transmission, then the plan is to hopefully find Neutral, where I can get the engine started, and then drive it into the garage where it is level and safe to get under it. Even with wheel chocks, my driveway is too steep to safely get me under it!

I figured this may not be an isolated problem with these trucks, so I thought I'd see if anyone else had encountered it.
Thanks again,
Karl
