Shifter Play
When i got in my 97 E250 this morning and shifted into drive, the shifter felt loose. The shifter just moves freely without noticeably clicking into any of the gears. I cannot get it into park and I have to wiggle the shifter to get it to start. Does this sound like a problem in the steering colum/shift linkage or a problem in the transmission. The cable is also still attached on the transmission. Any suggestions?

That sounds like a broken shift tube. The shift lever is inserted in the top end and the shift cable at the bottom. Remove the plastic cover under the steering column to reach the 4 nuts holding the column to the dash. Disconnect the indicator cable and lower the column to the seat. You should be able to see the broken part and replace it.
