Fuel Filter

Hey Guys,

Have had my Excursion for a few weeks now. Took it to the dealer for some maintenance on the brakes. Had them do oil and fuel filters while it was there. Dealer calls to tell me that the water drain valve had broken off when they tried to drain water and the needed to replace the housing. Picked it up today and this is what they found when they pulled off that assembly

That's some dirty fuel!!

Matt

Wow

More than likely it's the "gunk" that can build up at the bottom of your fuel tank.

This is also the reason people say why it's a bad idea to run the tank all the way empty.

That's a myth, there is no "extra junk" in the bottom of the tank that gets picked up.

Anyone who has replaced a pump will tell you the pick up is "on the bottom" already. Can't get much lower than the sock.

You know, running your car out of gas is a bad idea. Why do they have to make up stories to make it seem worse? If you do the pump fails and the car dies wherever you are, is that not enough of a reason to keep the gas tank with a little happiness sloshing around?

On a myth roll today.

Yes, any junk in the tank will surely be sucked up by the pickup right away.

If you have enough junk in the tank the pickup screen will clog up.

The stuff I see in the pic almost reminds me of filter element. What did the filter they changed out look like?

Right, if it is heavy enough junk to stay on the bottom it will clog the filter even with a full tank.

Actually this is a diesel right? This looks like bio-diesel that wasn't filtered properly.

It looked and felt like dirt - almost like GA red clay. It had formed it's self into little *****. The dealer told me that the upper fuel filter was disconnected. I'm not sure if that was a "work around" because this housing was so gunked up or what?

Sounds like someone wasn't feeding the Ex right. If they bypassed a filter it's likely they knew they were feeding something non-standard into the system like farm diesel or something. It's also a reason to regularly treat diesel fuel system. Today's diesels for cars are cleaner for this reason, but even they should receive treatment for possible contaminants.

I look at the filter on this link and the crap look alot like what you have.
Bio-diesel Compatible
