i,m trying to put ps on 71 straight drive. iread some where there are 2 diffence ps unit,1 is the sawigan and the other i don,t know. the other is longer and would have to cut steer column, but would the sawigan fit better.
There are a lot of threads on converting to ps. I've done a few and there are a lot of different steering column configurations, some are one year only. I've went through as many as 5 steering columns to get all the right parts I needed. A couple of our good Ford parts man members have offered up a wealth of knowledge, search it out. And fwiw, it is a Saginaw or Bendix steering box, the Bendix being the one that does not require column changes but it is also inferior to the Saginaw and much harder to find.
The Ford/Bendix power steering gear box is smaller than the Saginaw PS gear box. The Bendix version also tends to run hotter than the Saginaw and is usually equipped with a small PS fluid cooler.
I replaced the manual steering gear box in my '69 F-100 and replaced it with a Saginaw box. I replaced the stock '69 fixed steering column (for an automatic transmission) and replaced it with a tilt column from a '78 F-150, also designed for an automatic.
The Saginaw box will require a shorter steering column. It will also require a special stamped steel bracket the mounts on the engine side of the firewall and supports the lower end of the column tube.
If you currently have a manual steering column and switch to a shorter column for a Saginaw box, you'll also need to use the column to firewall seal that mounts to the inside of the firewall, at the lower end of the column tube.

Let me fix this for you.

wallyworld, I will attempt one more, basically the distance from the horn button to the vert. angle part of the gear is the same for both systems. The Bendix system (noted above) was replaced with the Saginaw system around 1970 and by 73 most all Ford trucks use it. The difference is the connect point at the rag joint. Because of the hydro lines, the connect point was moved about 2 1/3" closer to the firewall, requiring a matching system or modified (cut) steering column.
