I added power steering and a tilt column to my 66 but the column seems too long. I saw another p.s. box on ebay that looked quite a bit shorter. I believe it was a bendix. Am I mistaken? I thought about shortening the column about 4 inches if all else fails.
Rob
The Bendix box does not require any column swap. The box is same size. length wise, as the manual steering box. Offered limited period of years and hard to find anyone who rebuilds them. The Ford and Saginaw power steering box's are longer therefore require either shortening column, or later model column. i intend to take the mounting bracket off the original and mount on the later model column, therefore not require spacers. May need to pay attention to the shifting tube and steering shaft if considering shorting column. Good luck
Rob, The Ford gear by Saginaw from the 73-79 series is longer on top than the Bendix, but the column is shorter from the same series. A matched set if you will. The total measurement is the same for both your old and the new.
I would like to shorten mine a couple more inches, I like my arms more extended when driving.
I just installed a bendex system in my 65 last weekend(thanx again Banjo). The bendex is less than an inch longer than the manual one. This can be made up by moving the housing toward the driver by loosening the mounts under the column and at the firewall.Rebuilt boxes are available at NAPA and autozone with a limited lifetime warranty.I installed a trans cooler on mine as recommended by a few people here. What a difference P/S makes.
The cooler keeps the fluid cool and prolongs hose live! Lots of cars and trucks
came from the factory with them, they look like a steel hose that zig zags on
the low pressure return line.
I have been wanting to do the power steering changeover for a long time. So!!!
1. The power steering box 69-78 bolts straight in, right??
2. If I use the steering column stalk from the donor truck the steering wheel is in the same position, correct??
3. If the above is all correct......... this is a slick changeover!!! I already have disc brakes, this would complete one of the higher priority items on the list for my 66....
Thanks for the thread which allowed me to hopefully confirm all of this.
Open to all comments, there is nothing worse than getting into a project and then having someone say "Oh!!, I forgot to tellya!!!!!!!!!" That's where I don't wanna be on a Sunday afternoon at 5:01 pm
Is it possible I can get tilt, with column shift, AND no key on the column????
IF, I can do that, will my steering wheel still be roughly in the same position??
Thanks folks, not trying to be a pain in the butt, however, there is no need to reinvent the wheel if some of you have already been through this and I might be able to use your knowledge.
You could also get n old bendex system from a 65-67(I think) and it is a direct bolt up.No need to change the colmn.Make sure ya get the brackets and puleys you will need.Recommend you install a cooler. The bendex is not as durable as the newer systems, guess it depends on how much you use the truck.

Uh-oh, One more thing................Is it possible I can get tilt, with column shift, AND no key on the column???? IF, I can do that, will my steering wheel still be roughly in the same position??

Thanks again, a bunch,

uba, I got your note, and since you have ask the question here, I'll reply here. I'll have to confess that I can never remember the first year the Ford/Saganaw gear was used, it is in all 73-79 years. The same gear was used beyond those years but the gear was moved in front of the axle so the control gear on top of has a left hand thread worm gear.
The donor gear and column for the slicks can be found from the 73-79 year models of the F100, 150, 250, as well as Bronco. The tilts were found in the 78-79 year models of the F & Bronco. I also have one from a van but you have to cut 6 1/2" out of the length. No locks on the columns.
The newer columns are just a little different. The wiring and plug connections aren't the same, and neither is the bracket that fastens to the under side of the dash. It's pretty easy to figure out how to rewire if you have the color code, and the bracket can be removed from the 65-66 column by drilling out the spot welds. Then simply position the bracket on the newer column, and tack weld in place.
