My starter was going out a few years back. Sometimes the solenoid would just click and that was it, but a second key turn and it started just fine. The day it went was a beautiful sunny day, it was at least 80 out, I had just driven a good hour on the highway, stopped for maybe a 20 minute pitstop. Engine was still very warm, starter was cranking, but not fast enough... Ended up running down the batteries before I realized it was the starter.
Moral of the story, just because an engine is warm, doesn't mean its going to start. A worn out injector pump and bad injectors could also be an issue with a warm engine, and glow plugs may help boost the precombustion temps enough.
Oh. I guess I am just used to good starting diesels.
