Blown glow plug

Hello

I replaced glow plug with autolites. Their was an injection pump problem and a manual pump problem. My guys that drove the truck did the non no with starting fluid. I have changed injection pump, glow plug relay, return line kit etc. I tested all glow plugs and one was bad. I pulled that one out and replaced Truck started great . Shutoff and tried starting no go. Same glow plug blew again. Thought, questions comment. My mind leads to a new harness. It is strange that only one keeps blowing out same cylinder

Thx

first off, only use motorcraft/beru glow plugs. autolites are some of the worst that you can use.

i had the same 4 plugs keep burning out on me. i had my injectors pop tested and 4 of them were bad. i don't know if they were the same cylinders that kept burning the glow plugs, but new plugs and injectors and i have been fine since.

let me get my thread about testing the glow plug circuit.

If you still have problems with that GP after your test the rest of the system, I would say that Autolites are probably the cause of the burn out. Some people have reported almost immediate failure with them. How long do you run the truck before the GP fails? It is also not unheard of to have a leaky injector that pushes up inner cylinder temps to the point of prematurely burning out a GP, though not as common as crappy Autolites.

Whatever GP you use, you should bench test them before installing them.
All you have to do is use a 10 amp battery charger to energize each one until it glows redhot. Let thewm cool before installing. I had a set that blew the side out when I did this. I believe that that the MgO that's used to insulate the heating coil from the sheath can absorb moisture from the environment and will make steam to cause the sheath to bubble and rupture.

I had autolites and had them mostly nlow out . So i changed with new botch . It worked for awhile then stopped working . I was working on the truck yesterday because it was not starting good. I knew it was a bad glow plug. I was right . I re3placed it , ran the truck for an half hr or so . Let the truck sit for a bit and went to start tough start . Check the glow plugs same one gone . I did replace that one with a leftover autolite I had from the last change. So they were all botch and 1 autolite. I did also change the controller a few months ago. I thin it came out of an aloder ford diesel. Mine is a 94 make a difference?

our trucks are designed to use motorcraft glow plugs. autolite, bosh, champion, wellman, ac-delco, or any other glow plug will not work properly, and most burn out within 5 start cycles..
you need motorcraft-beru ZD-9 glow plugs. you can get them online at rock auto for $9.15 each.

MOTORCRAFT Part # ZD9
