hard to start

Hi i have a 1987 f250 6.9idi and i have been having some problems lately. After i let it sit all night even with it plugged in i run my batteries dead trying to start it and i have put in new injectors, returnline kit, fuel supply pump, and starter, and is has newer batteries and glow plugs. I don't know what else to do besides maybe a new injection pump?

Have you read the glow plug sticky thread?

Check the battery cables. Clean up the connections on the ends.

You say newer glow plugs, what brand?

Are you sure they are working?
There's a good chance they are burnt out and that is causing your problem.

Replace with Motorcraft/Beru glow plugs.

I'll say it again, go read the glow plug sticky and how to test if they are working or not.

If its plugged in all night I would think it should start fine with non working plugs. The long cranking is usually a leak in the lines and all your fuel having to be pumped back out of the tanks all the way to the front of the truck everytime u start it

i agree. i think you have a fuel supply problem.
when it is cranking, do you get any smoke out of the tailpipe?

Just a thought but if he has bad gp's and its plugged in all night it doesn't mean the block heater is functioning just because its plugged in....

either way, if it is getting fuel it will push white smoke out the pipe when trying to start.
no smoke out = no fuel in.

It had better not need glowplugs after being plugged in all night. Definitely a fuel problem.

Should I let fuel supply pump run longer before starting?

You're absolutely wrong about that one.

My starter was going out a few years back. Sometimes the solenoid would just click and that was it, but a second key turn and it started just fine. The day it went was a beautiful sunny day, it was at least 80 out, I had just driven a good hour on the highway, stopped for maybe a 20 minute pitstop. Engine was still very warm, starter was cranking, but not fast enough... Ended up running down the batteries before I realized it was the starter.
Moral of the story, just because an engine is warm, doesn't mean its going to start. A worn out injector pump and bad injectors could also be an issue with a warm engine, and glow plugs may help boost the precombustion temps enough.

Natedowney, if it doesn't start after replacing the glow plugs, make sure the battery connections are in good shape. Also, are you sure the manual pushbutton is working?

if you are dumping a lot of white smoke, your glow plugs are probably burned out, and the block heater is not working.

8 motorcraft ZD9 glow plugs, and 10 seconds glow time over 30 degrees. 15 seconds glow time under 30 degrees.
it should fire rite up.
motorcraft ZD-9 glow plugs are $9.17 each at rock auto: MOTORCRAFT Part # ZD9
if you have the ZD-1 glow plugs with the spade connectors, they are $9.59 each at rock auto: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...48-ZD1A-145203
