If it starts on ether and not glow plugs, something isnt right with the glow plugs, or its just plain not turning over fast enough. Are you sure the starter is spinning it over good?

It's got new batteries it turns over real fast I believe I'm going to plug it in tonight and see what happens in the morning awhile back it started when ithad been plugged in so we will see I picked up a compression checker that if it doesn't start being plugged in I guess I will do a compression check and make sure I'm not wasting my time it just sounds so impressive when it s running I hate to give up

When it's cold, make sure the cold advance solenoid is activated(pull the wire with the key on, engine off and see if it clicks). If not, you have a problem.
It'll often /start/ without it, but will smoke horribly due to how retarded it is.

what brand glow plugs did you put in it? if they were autolites, they are most likely burned out already. i have seen autolites burn out after one start.
champions, bosch, wellmans, dieselRX, AC delco, or any other glow plug that is not made by motorcraft/beru usually just dont work properly in these engines.
there are some people that swear by off brands, but 99% of us have had nothing but bad luck with the off brands.

As Tom said, Autolites are utter crap, Beru/Motorcraft are 'considered' the best.

I have had good luck with the DieselRX/Wellman glow plugs, and will continue to use them, even though some of us believe they are crap. I've not had bulging issues, and they generally stay working just fine.

Remember, though, with a manual glow plug setup you can kill /ANY/ glow plug by holding the power too long. I've done that a couple of times over the years, usually when something /else/ is wrong and I'm "blaming" my glow plugs for not getting hot enough, so I held the button down longer.

Do note that if you intend to keep a manual glow plug system, you may want to pick up some 6.9-style(spade top) glow plugs(DRX00088) to use with your 7.3 relay and wiring. For a manual system, it warms up a little slower, gives you more 'leeway' with leaving the button pushed down too long. It's still fast, though - 10 second range.

This is how I did mine:
(Note: Ignore the Cummins starter bit, but your truck /should/ crank that fast with a good starter).

Motorcraft/beru plugs like Tom said. Rockauto has them if you dont mind waiting on shipping. You could ask the store you got the autolites from if they can get motorcraft. Maybe they will credit you for the Autolites.
