What Injectors?

Hey guys,
Well, at nearly 300k miles, my injectors are starting to go downhill. Looking at the price for stock injectors, I figure I might as well upgrade a bit since I have a new HPOP, and don't want to put $1100 into new injectors if I can pay a few hundred more for something that will be a bit more fun. My question is, how MUCH bigger than stock should I go?

The off-the-shelf IH AC160 with stock nozzle was engineered for the International T444E HO (High Output) - fraternal twin to the Ford 7.3L Powerstroke. Going with that injector requires tuning, which can be in the PCM, programmer, or chip. You'll have lower EGTs in a tow tune than you would in stock, and the permagrin factor goes way up. Since that injector was specifically engineered for the engine (akin to a factory-authorized mod), I can never poo-poo the stick.

Caveat - This stick is PMS in kit form, so once they are installed - beware of the urge to rev up the Buck$Zooka.

What is PMS and where do I get the injectors? An international dealer?

PMS = Powerstroke Modification Syndrome........like ebola.....but there are maintenance drugs so you can live with the disease.....

I believe RiffRaff has the ACs....they will be my choice as well when I need to make that decision.

But that is assuming you just want a little more oomph as the "what injector" question is usually best answered with "what is your goal and usage for the truck?"..........

I found them on Riffraff a few minutes after I asked the question. But, she is a pavement pounder DD that occasionally tows. Never more than 5000 pounds. A little oomph and smilefactor points would really be more than enough since she doesn't have a problem pulling now.

Then it sounds like Tugly's suggestion is probably a good option....new ACs combined with a tuner like the Hydra and some simple tunes will be a good solid reliable option. The ACs will need tunes to run well as they are single shots vs. stock splits (common knowledge but I figured I would mention it).

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but with ACs, tuner, exhaust and intake I believe you should be able to put 325-350hp to the wheels without breaking a sweat.

I think that's the number. I've learned the HP number doesn't blow my hair back, but torque does (AC's put any pout in peril). Since I have a shaved head, I leave you with that image stuck in yours.

Damn it, Tugly! That is not an image I wanted in my head early Thursday morning! Those numbers seem to be the perfect area for me.

I'll second Tugly's recommendation of NEW AC's. While I like the performance of the injectors I went with, there are many on this site who have had issues with rebuilt injectors from highly reputable companies. Going with NEW injectors is paying a little more for insurance on something that's gonna be in your rig for the next 200k miles. And new 160 AC's, along with the requisite tune(s), will definitely make you smile. I'm sure some people are going to step in and say they had awesome experience with X brand of rebuilts, which is just fine. If I were to do it again, I'd be all over new AC's (I'm still chasing the cold start smoke issue from before/after injector replacement).

Really no better injector out there then a new AC injector. It will work with the factory HPOP, will work with the factory fuel system and pump, will work with the factory turbo...

One would assume you have gauges... If not get some... EGT, Boost, Trans temp and if you can swing it I highly recommend fuel pressure.

Get yourself a billet compressor wheel (Riffraff has the best version on the market IMHO).

Get yourself a Hydra chip from any vendor of your choice (Alligator has some of the best pricing and quick shipping).

A set of AC (160/0) injectors will put you right at 350hp, more then enough to tow anything you want, anywhere you want. Also more then enough to blow away 80% of the stop light guys you come on.

I'm just going to echo whats already been said but with the caveat that I've run this setup. Its hard to go wrong with AC injectors (Alliant 'AC' Injector - Riffraff Diesel Performance), a billet wheel (Riffraff Diesel Billet Compressor Wheel 94-03 - Riffraff Diesel Performance), and some good tuning (7.3L 6-Position Custom tunes - MODIFIED SETUP - Riffraff Diesel Performance). Power will make you grin ear to ear. EGTs will be more than manageable. And reliability won't be sacrificed.
