Well my 7.3 has 317k on stock injectors and im looking into replacing them. Since im a cheap *** I was wondering if having my stock injectors upgraded to 175cc would be a good idea (it would be accompanied by a tuner).
I would like to go with a single shot injector but they are a lot more expensive than it would be to my stock ones upgraded.
This engine is a complete virgin. Nothing but oem stuff was ever used. Would I need all those things to support 175cc injectors? I've read that you usually just need a tuner to go with the injectors and it'll run great.
And would having the stock split shot injectors modded to be 175cc be a good idea or should I just invest in some new injectors?

Stock fuel pump wont provide enough pressure with bigger injectors
with out an intercooler, you wont run long with a lot of power that makes more heat especially towing
HPOP stock wont handle the bigger injectors at full output
Rebuilt is going to be cheaper than new. Jim rebuilds them with a warranty as good a new warranty and everyone here likes his service and I will go with him when its my time.
maybe you need to figure out how much HP you want and how much you can afford
who does the stock split shot to single shot conversion? Will any old tuner do? What cc would you recommend for a truck that will just have a tuner, 4" straight pipe and an intake?
thanks for the help and advice so far!! (Sorry for all the questions, im new to diesels and relatively new to trucks in general)
So would I be able to get away with the cheap rosewood upgrade? the truck has 317k and the PO said they were stock injectors
also what supporting mods would be required to run those modded injectors without issues?
You could get Rosewood's stage one injectors, plug them in your truck, and it would work fine with no upgrades. You would only be using 90cc of the available 160cc though because the truck's computer doesn't know that there is a bigger injector in there.
Therefore, if you want to realize the full potential of your new stage 1 injectors, you'll need to get a chip (either TS6, Hydra, or whatever you end up getting) with custom tunes that use all the available injector capacity. There have been some users that just used "canned" tunes on their TS6 chip with stage 1 injectors and it ran just fine, so it really is up to you.
As far as any other mods, the essential list is:
3" downpipe
Catalitic converter delete
gauges: EGT, Fuel pressure, Trans temp, and boost
If you tow, be careful. Even little upgrades can be a slippery slope.
I'd spend on the gauges 1st if you haven't already, you need a baseline. My 97 had 200K on it last year when I upgraded to Baby Swamps (150/146) and had my TS-6 chip reprogrammed accordingly.
I have a very healthy truck, fresh stock fuel system (65 PSI Idle, 40+ at WOT), S&B Air box, fresh coolant and filtration system, 3" Downpipe with 5" exhaust. New boost boots and upgraded clamps and no up-pipe leaks.
In tow/haul tune with just a 7k holiday trailer I have to drive by the EGT gauge here in East TN. All sorts of boost and power but hot. So now it's on to Intercooler and E-Fuel as mentioned earlier, probably a turbo rebuild/upgrade at some point as well.
All I'm saying is it's fun but there will be more. If you don't tow you still need gauges but you can get away with a lot more.
We rarely get to do a "cheap" Budget Build on the older injectors. Most are in pretty poor shape when we see them.
If you want to attempt the Budget Build, send them in, we'll get them apart and let you know what we find. But you should at least be prepared for a Premium Build. Or live with injectors in poor condition if you can't afford to fix them properly if needed.
I don't charge any more for the Stage-1's upgrade over stock, because I feel it's a great upgrade for the older trucks, even with minimal other mods.
