Need help identifying this noise....
If you run your hubs locked, your exercising the outer bearing in the hub which is more frail.
The immortal bearing within the hub spins always. (like a 2 wheel drive)
If your locked in, your rotating your whole front end.
I think what your hearing and feeling with the badda bang badda bing is that your hub bearings went south and the outer axle shaft stub is slapping the **** outta your front end.
Get under the truck and grab the outer axle shaft beyond (toward the wheel). check for a lot, and I mean a lot, there is always a 1/16th inch or so of slop. If it shakes around like a puppy ****ting razor blades, you have some work to do. Easy work but outer shafts are pricey. Caution: don't get used.
Simple check. Pull your locking hubs completely off, make sure it's in 2 wheel drive. Go for a spin. No noise/slap......... Locking Hubs. Still there?, Hub bearing or stub shaft beyond repair. Easily replaced but pricey.
Some guys in here run the oem hubs simply because they run in climates where you may or may not need to be locked up until you crest a hill and say holy ****. I'm a flatlander kinda and just run mine locked up because I will be using it when the plow is on or I'm on a rescue mission.
I just know when I need to be locked so I put milemarker stainless premos on her and get out of the truck if duty calls eliminating the whole vac hub assy.
Right wrong or indif..........that's how I would troubleshoot this one.
Think of it as a CV joint in a car that only makes noise on hard turns. Your front shafts are that idea.
Keep us up to date.
BTW, you can also plug your vac lines to the hubs, while you have your hubs removed, engage your 4x4 and take a roll to eliminate your driveline in the front as the culprit. Don't be hard on it because there will be no resistance with the hubs off. Just roll easy and see what you feel.
I'm probably full of ****, but I don't really care

Denny
