I remember playing with a 445 on my DD2000 and the crane #521 hyd roller made the best torque curve. I think it was making 500ft lbs at like 2k rpm or something stupid like that. Its been like 4 years so I can't remember the exact numbers. But at least check out the #521.
I'm building a 445 too BTW. But I'm thinking about going to a solid can now....

I will check that one out too. I haven't posted anything lately because I haven't done anything. Unfortunately it's been rough at home...first my dad spent like 2.5 months in the hospital then 2 weeks after he got out my Grandpa went in and is still in. With work and hospital trips I haven't had much time or felt like working on the motor. I do need to soon make a cam choice so I at least have it to get started.
Well little update.....I think family stuff is somewhat back to normal so it's soon time to play again. Shortly after my last post I did order a hyd roller cam and lifters from Survival. However I have yet to see them! I did talk to Barry today and he said Comp Cams is the holdup and my cam should arrive this week. I think it's going to take longer to gather all the parts rather than build this thing.
Interesting. I looked on the Comp Cam site and they don't specify a hydraulic roller cam for the FE. I've been looking at the Lunati and a custom grind for my 410. Crane is also a possibility.
I wrote to Barry on the email on his website, and for the second time he hasn't responded. Why put your email on the site if you won't answer?

I noticed the same thing on Comp Cams website however they definitely do make the cams for Barry. I'm not sure what deal he has worked out. I don't know what email the website uses but I've emailed him at Barry@survivalmotorsports.com and he usually responded. The other days was the first time I actually spoke to him...he usually never answers. He apologized several times for the way things are going. I think he's at the point where he needs employees.
I found this cam on ebay, and searched the number on their site:P/N 33-432-9, Grind Number XR280HR. They don't show it if you search by engine type.
I gave up on Survival, I'll just figure it out as best I can. I'm thinking of going roller because once you go to all the trouble of putting it in, why not get the best bang you can. It is only a few hundred bucks difference in the end. I also understand you can get a more aggressive profile and hold on to more low end performance.
That's sorta what I was thinking. However I probably coulda just used a hyd flat tappet cam and got the same result. The part I like is no break in and can run whatever oil I want.
That cam woulda been a little small for me I think. I'm not sure about the dual pattern either but what do I know lol. I'm hoping the one I picked works out.
I'm not planning on ordering that one either, but I have now found a Comp Cam Hydraulic Roller for an FE, so I know they exist. I am considering a Lunati custom grind. I'm looking for good low end torque with longer legs. I've posted my rear wheel dyno a few times, I have 330 lbs-ft at the wheels, but the peak is very low and it runs out of gas by 4500. I want longer legs but I like the low end grunt. Looking at a roller to hold onto the low end and get more stretch.
The reason I wrote to Barry is it seems he knows as much as anyone about how to set up an FE, and I was prepared to pay his price to get his recommendation, but if he won't write back, time to work it out myself.
I kinda felt the same way but after talking to him he kinda redeemed himself. He's a decent guy to talk to. I do know your best bet of getting a hold oh him is like 4:30a or so. That's when he answers most of his questions people have or really late. I don't think he sleeps.
That grind I picked might actually be good for you too.
Do you have a grind number or the cam specs? I am thinking hard on it.
What I have under consideration is a custom grind as follows:
Lobe Separation: 112
Intake Centreline: 108
Valve timing at .006" of lift:
Exhaust 51 and -1 degrees, Intake 7 and 43 degrees.
Overlap: 6 degrees
Duration at 0.050: 230/230
Valve Lift: .568
Lobe Lift: .328
This is a proposal from Lunati's tech support for a custom grind, so I don't have a part number.
Blair Patrick Enterprises is another great source for FE information & parts, (423) 837-1514. There is also Brent Lynkins at Lynkins Motorsports, (502) 759-1431 & Tom Lucas at FE Specialties, (916) 339-0427. These guys can get you all the same stuff Barry has access to.

I have only talked to Barry on the phone, Blair Patrick and Brett Lykins both post on the forums above with Barry, and Tom Lucas has been mentioned as high quality also. Note these all are high quality, low volume, 1 or 2 man shops. They are not Jegs or Summit! FEs are not well supported by the aftermarket like chebby! Manufacturers will sometimes only build in batches when enough orders have been received, not necessarily when the customer wants it (now).

I don't have a exact cam card of what I ordered but I could show you the one that. Just showed up.
I called and spoke to Barry's helper so we'll see where my cam is I guess. The lifters seem like they are good quality at least.
