I am wanting to hook something up to the reverse/back up lights on my truck. I know it is the center connection on the 7 wire plug, but want to tap into it further up stream of the wrapped harness.
Does anyone know what color wire this would be?
I am hooking up the reverse light LED bar and a back up alarm FWIW.
Doing a Google search is shows a few different colors, so I'm looking for some real knowledge from you.
Pull one of the tail lights out and see what color the wires are going to the reverse light.
I would have, but I installed tail light guards which were kind of a pain and really didn't want to have to remove them and then install them again.
So I grabbed a test light and crawled under the truck, hit it lucky with the first wire probe.
So now when I put it in reverse I have my OEM back up lights, a LED light bar, a small light that is attached to the reverse beeper and sound.
I also have reverse lights on my headache rack, but I wired those up to one of the upfitter switches so that the lights could be used whenever I needed light in the bed of my truck for things such as hitching up the 5th wheel, reaching for tools in the tool box in the dark.

so what’s the answer? What color was the wire? I’m trying to figure this same issue out.
Should be the purple-ish wire with the orange stripe. My 17 and new 21 has the same ones. Should be in the middle of the plug, use the test light to make sure. I used them to install the bumper with reverse lights.
I’m putting new mirrors on my 03 F250 and they have back up lights (courtesy lights). Where is the plug in that photo? Is it directly off of the steering column? Thanks in advance.
2wd, 5.4l extended cab.
Thank you. I was needing to get in at the steering column and ended up having to remove the fuse box to get access to the connectors. After some probing I found that my backup light wire was black w/ a pink stripe. It seems if you ask ten people you get tend different answers and I’m guessing that due to production variables of the vehicle. It was the same color back at the backup lights themselves fortunately. A side note. I pulled and cleaned the connectors under the dash with crc electronic cleaner and it solved a digital glitch in my odometer. You’ll want to make sure to re-administer some dielectric grease to the pins when going back together. Looking at the fuses this connector is at the bottom right of the distribution bow under the drivers kick panel.
