I just picked up a 2002 super cab 4x4 with a 5.4l auto trans with overdrive can any one tell me what trans is in it and what kind of fluid to use or are there multiples. Thanks for the help.
95% chance it is the 4r70w.
Just look on your VIN plate on drives side door jamb. Look for the TR code.
If it is "U", it is the 4r70w, if it is it is a "E" 4r100
The original fluid is speced as Mercon V.
Mercon V is being or has been phased out by Motorcraft and replaced by Mercon LV, the latest type for several years now.
If you cannot find Mercon V then look closely at fluids that that indicate they are a suitable replacement for Mercon V or go to a dealer and get the new LV.
Good luck.

This is wrong info. Mercon V and LV are NOT interchangeable. Mercon V replaced Mercon III. Mercon LV is used in most 2009 and newer vehicles. There is also Mercon SP which is used in some 6r80s and 5r110s. Your 2002 will use Mercon V.
NO it is NOT wrong information!
When you cannot find Mercon V any longer what do you think your going to uses besides another Mercon V compatible brand or LV?
Last I checked Ford did not yet license it (LV) to other venders. it maybe by this time.
Further, I have a custom built 4r70 from a well known major performance shop that runs Mercon V. The builder when asked about this said use LV in it's place as it will be backward compatible with Mercon V but not III.
The major differences are the formulation vs the clutch packs and band lining materials plus lubrication qualities.
Good luck.
Do not use in applications where MERCON® V, MERCON® SP (exceptTorqShift®), Continuously Variable Chain Type Transmission Fluid, Motorcraft® Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid, FNR5 Automatic Transmission Fluid or Type F Automatic Transmission Fluid is recommended, or in transfer cases
Merc V will be around for quite some time, Ford just made it cheaper for aftermarket to make by dropping some of the certification requirements that were redundant (so hopefully that means cheaper Merc V for us).
This being said, several aftermarket fluid makers are making universal ATF that is compatable with both Merc V and LV vehicles, so not sure how that works.
I actually am using some Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic ATF that has Merc LV certification, and was told by Valvoline it is safe for Merc V also. I have 4 qts in my transmission now with no ill effects (so far, knock on wood).
Bluegrass you are wrong plain and simple. I work on these things for a living and have overhauled many transmissions. Mercon V replaced Mercon III in the early 2000s. Mercon LV is it's own fluid and does not interchange with Mercon V. I'm not going to argue over the internet. It's ok to be wrong but at least admit to it.

Yes, you're wrong. MERCON V is still produced. It has not been phased out. MERCON has been phased out, not MERCON V.
