Tranny fluid type help?
Just look on the trans dipstick and see what oil it says to use in that particular trans. If it says Mercon V, do not use fluid that is specified for both dextron 3 and mercon, only use for Mercon V. If it states just Mercon, then dex3 or Mercon will work but not Mercon V. Most of the older ones used type F which cannot be mixed with Dex 3, or Dex 3 cannot be used in a trans using type F. A good number of newer synthetics can be used for both applications but be sure to check with the oil mfg, (as most have had to repair trans under their insurance and will remember lol) The clutch material is the hangup with using the wrong fluid as it deterioates the lining material in short order, you may want to look at the cluches when they are removed and it should tell the story. rk
That is unfortunate , I will keep you posted on the outcome of my fluid change. In the meantime: Take a look at my posting regarding your concern over mercon v by searching " jeff44ranger " .
