Started running rough

I've got an 01 7.3 and for some reason yesterday it just started running rough like if a car had a miss in it. Also light on dash says "service engine soon "
I know absolutely nothing about diesels and don't even know where to begin to look or what it could be.
A friend told me it could need a new fuel filter so I replaced it. As soon as I can get it to seal and stop leaking I'll see if that's what it is.
If not, where would I start to pinpoint my problem ?
Thanks

Do you have any type of scan tool to read the SES code? Some things will show up on a basic tool but I think others require more sophisticated scan tools like AE

No I don't have any kind of scan tool. Someone else told me it might be an injector. If that's what it is, how do you determine which one and are they hard to replace?
I've had this truck for over 3 years and never had an ounce of trouble out of it.

Do you have a multimeter? Click the UVCH link in my signature.

Might try unplugging the harness from the ICP sensor. It's a quick and easy check. If the miss goes away when you do it, or you see oil in the connector, replace.
