i was on my way up north for work and about an hour into my trip it had what seemed like a missfire, truck kind of jerked, it did it again a few seconds later then was good for about 100 feet then started doing it alot.
I pulled over and it idle'd fine, reved it up a little and everything was fine, started drivin again made it another 100 feet and it started shuttering badly now, i pulled over and it idel'd quite rough, so i turned the truck off. I started it again and it was fine, decided to turn around and head back and made it another 100 feet and same thing, this time when i shut it off and tried starting again it idel'd really rough.
So i called the tow truck and hader taken home, when i got home i fired her up and she was good, reved it to about 2000 and held it for a minute or two and there was no issues.
Oh and i noticed the engine light came on when it started running rough but it didnt stay on after it started running smoothly, now if it was an engine problem wouldnt the code be stored and the light stay on?
I dont have a reader handy to see if it did store a code but i asumed the light would stay on if one was stored.
Anyone have any ideas? i was thinkin some bad fuel maybe cuz i topped up from half a tank before i left.
P.S. the fuel pump is humming so i dont think thats the culprit
I used an innova obd2 reader, it said there was no codes dected, and the engine light only flashed on when the engine started running rough, but then went out as soon as it smoothed out.
The fuel filted should be good i just changed it a month or 2 ago but i guess it doesn't hurt to check it again
These engines are not OBDII compliant, so your scanner isn't seeing the code. I'd say you've either got a CPS going out or a UVCH issue. Know anyone with a better scanner? Got a spare CPS? Got a multi-meter where you could ohm the UVCH?
sounds really similar to what i just went through. I found that 2 wires from the engine harness had rubbed through, on the valve cover. Also UVCH looked like it was separating......heres the thread i started on it
but all 96 and newer vehicles sold in the US have to be OBD2 compliant by federal law, plus it says it in my manual
The vehicle is, the motor is not. You can pull ABS codes, and generic stuff with your scanner. Your motor was made my International and was designed as a medium duty truck engine. Medium duty truck engines did not have to meed OBDII requirements, so they didn't. That's why you can't pull engine specific codes with your scanner.
