86 E350 Van, 351W ?HO?

Okay I'm a bit excited because I have an elderly relative who is selling his 86 E350 camper van. It's all original. He says it has a 351W with a 4 barrel and a C6. 40,000 miles. The van is a total rust bucket but everything has been well maintained. What are the chances this is the HO motor? Any way to tell visually by looking at it? Is it in the vin? I'd love to pull the drivetrain for my bump.

The easy way to tell is that if it is an '86 351W it's an HO.

It's all original and it's got a 4bbl it's a HO. But don't get too excited there is nothing too special about the motor.. it's the same longblock as the 2bbl version except that it's got a half decent cam and a 4bbl intake.

More compression, bigger cam, 4 bbl heads and intake. The HO motor is 60hp more than the non HO. That's worth getting excited about when you're replacing a tired old 360. Not to mention the price is right for my budget. Being from a van I wonder if I need to change the oil pan?

Wrong. Same compression, same heads, the only difference is the 4 bbl intake and carb. I'd also suspect the cam's the same as well, but I'm not 100% on that. Ford only cast two small block heads in 1986, the E5's and the E6SE's. There were no 4 bbl heads cast then, Period.

The HO does have more cam, it is THE reason this motor makes more power as the carb and intake alone wouldn't do anything.

The intake and carb will make some difference. Proof of this is the old 60's 289. The only difference between the 2 bbl and the non Hi-Po 4 bbl motor was the intake and carb.
