Engine swap

I am replacing the original 302 with a 351 4 brl. I Got a complete donor van with a rebuilt 351. Any info on the things that must be changed , would be a great help thanks. I am swapping out the engine and transmission together., without separating them.

Nice van! I would like to find an extended E350 version of your van.

If your 351 is a 351W and not a 351M it should be pretty much a bolt in deal.

The 351W shares the same motor mounts as the 302. So no messing with the frame perches/towers.

Are both transmissions non OD automatics? If there are then they are Both C6 automatics.

I believe the exhaust Y-pipe will be different. So if you can use the one out of your donor van then you'll be set with that.

Use whichever radiator is bigger too.

Just don't get rid of your donor van until the swap is finished. That way if there are any small parts that you need, you'll have them right in the other van. I made that mistake back in my youth. I stripped everything I thought I would need and scrapped the rest. Only to find out I missed some things I needed.

Thanks guys. I have not done a swap in over 20 years and I'm not sure what I may be forgetting.

[QUOTE=68Mercury250Ranger;15288926]I agree with the previous post including the part about looking or an extended version....yea I would love the extra space in the extended van. The longest E350 with the 460 would be nice.

NO , Both have OD

Yea I am also using it to fill full of old parts. I also get power Windows and locks, inside door handle for the back doors.

Thanks for your input.

What year is your donor van? If it's a factory 351W 4V then I would be guessing it's in the 84-87 range. And does it have an OD button on the dash? If it does not have an OD button then both transmissions should be AOD's and not an E4OD, which would complicate the swap.

Does your shifter have a button on it for OD? I don't think they had an electric OD transmission in 83. If your shift indicator goes: P,R, D ( with circle around it ) , 2, 1 with no button. Then it's the AOD.

If your 351W donor has the C6 and the E250 has the AOD you are going to run into some differences when swapping them. It's been a long time since I owned anything with the AOD. But you might get into wiring differences ( for the nuetral safety switch ) , shift linkages, driveshaft length and possibly even need to swap out the steering column ( unlikely but possible ) . Like I said it's been close to 20 years since I owned anything with an AOD. So I'm just going off my crappy memory.

your 83 E250 won't/shouldn't have an overdrive trans.
it is probably a C6 also, they look completely different. you would be able to see the difference with a quick roll under and a flashlight.

If he's a lucky dog he might also have one that someone added a Gear Vendors unit to.

You can ID the transmission by the shape of the pan on it. Due to your vans ages I would say they are either AOD or C6. But someone could have also swapped them out for something else in the past.

Here's a couple pics to help.
