Fuel Filter/Seperator

Hey guys and gals...I know I been out of touch for a couple of months (been VERY hectic around here this summer) and it's kind of presumptuous of me to just pop in and ask questions, but can anyone help me out?

I'm once again chasing problems with the Monster. Currently she doesn't want to start and when I look at the gauges the fuel pressure never get's above about 100 when the starter is spinning.

I'd like to check the fuel filter on the frame wall but I forgot to measure the OEM cover to see what size wrench I need to remove it.

I'm at work, so driving home (whoops...no vehicle, car pooling with my wife) at lunch is out of the question.

Anyone know the size so I can pick one up on the way home tonight?

Also, any other ideas why she would suddenly without any advanced warning just decide not to start?

She was running great on the way to work yesterday and then I had to have her towed home because she wouldn't start.

I don't have all the gauge readings, but I remember the IPC was at .82 with fuel pressure only at 100 when I was trying to start her. If I recall correctly, the running fuel pressure is usually around 1000 or so depending on throttle position.

Thanks,

Patrick

I think you meant ICP or HPOP pressure instead of fuel psi? If you saw 1000 psi fuel pressure, you wouldn't need a tool to take the plastic fuel filter cap off....just start the truck and it would blow off.

You may have a HPO leak... unless I totally misunderstood something

EDIT: the lower fuel filter cap is 36mm or 1 7/16" and the upper is 24 mm or 15/16"...some people have had success using a typical oil filter tool to get the caps off.

Are you confusing fuel press. with the ICP press? Fuel press. should not be over 70 to 75 lbs. max

sorry...ICP pressure

I'm trying to type quickly at work without anyone seeing me.

I mixed up my words when asking about the fuel filter cover and the ICP pressure.

I too fear a HPOP issue, since I have a slow oil leak...it appears to be coming from the HPOP cover, but I won't know for sure until I have it completely torn apart.

Thinking out loud here...if the oil level is low could the HPOP be OK but the engine still not start?

It's not that low today, but tomorrow it will be (after I start taking things apart...)

Any idea what size that wrench for the fuel filter/separator cover is?

You mean the HFCM filter cap on the frame, below the driver's seat? It's in post #2

OK, now I am confused.

After I took the cap off the fuel regulator, checked for fuel and put the cover back on...She started!

Does a sick HPOP sometimes allow the truck to start and sometimes not?

So how can I troubleshoot an intermittent no start? The starter seems fine so other than a n oil leak somewhere behind the turbo above the transmission I can't find a thing wrong...

There is definitely a lot of wiggle in the ICP...I think I'll pull it all apart and replace it and inspect the IPR...probably have to replace both of them.
