How should I proceed from here?
I'm an artist, not a mechanic, but I've done things like replaced an engine and a couple of transmissions so I am not helpless. Just clueless

The most common cause of your problem is a bad Under Valve Cover Harness. You can test the continuity from the valve cover connector before diving in, but the UVCH problem is overwhelmingly common. Some people do the fifty-cent mod (install a spreader on the UVCH locking tab), but I've seen a few of those fail. If you enjoy wrenching on a diesel and want to try it for almost no cost - do the mod and try your luck.
I tried it on two trucks, and they both failed. I now preach "Replace both UVCHs and be done with it."
I proceeded with your suggestions and when I started to lift the valve cover gasket from the head, the wiring harness plug fell away from the gasket connection. That was the problem. Rather than plug it back in and hope for the best, I bought a new harness from NAPA ($70 China made) and installed it. TRUCK RUNS GREAT NOW!
This new harness is hardwired to the inside of the gasket and the wires appear to be smaller than the one I removed. I didn't care for the smaller wires.
Thanks for the help
