2008 Ford escape. Parked it last night with all windows up. Walked out to it today and the back left window was partially down. Tried rolling up and down but it won't move without help and it won't stay up. I hear the motor spinning but no movement on the window. It belongs to a family member and it's her daily driver. How do i fix it and is something broken?
Poke around at rockauto.com to see what a window regulator assembly with motor looks like for the 2008 Escape. They have a left rear Motorcraft rebuilt, it is miss-filed under something like "power window motor gear".
The motor winds/unwinds cable onto a spool. So if it winds on one side (the pulling side), it is unwinding on the other side (the slack side). This moves the trolley up and down the track depending on which direction the motor turns. The window glass is attached to the trolley.
This idea is used for most cars these days. I have never opened up a door panel yet on an Escape (and hope never to have to ). But have replaced them on other. What I learned was... not to attempt to replace only the motor on a cable-operated window regulator! Instead, to just to go ahead and replace the whole regulator assembly with motor as a unit. Not only is trying to handle the cable in a motor-only replacement attempt a real bear, often the cable is kinked, or a part of the regulator wore through, which meant the whole thing needed to be replaced anyway.
Those are my experiences, anyway.
I would take the door panel off, and take a look in there with a good LED flashlight. You will probably find... it's broke.
Thanks. I figured I'd replace the regulator anyway. So I pulled the door panel and one of the cables was laying in the bottom of the door. The blue part with the spring around it is busted too
