Guys, the NP208 on Rusty is leaking at the shift detent, as circled in red in the illustration below. The shop manual doesn't mention any sealer needing to be applied to it when assembling the t-case, nor is there a gasket shown for it. So, does anyone know if it should have sealer on it? And, do I need to drain the t-case before pulling that? I'm fairly sure I do, but thought I'd ask.
Well, on closer inspection it apparently isn't the threads of the shift detent bolt. So, will JB Weld hold there? Do I have to drain it and flush all the lube away to get it to stick? Or, does it have to come apart and be heliarced?
Hmmm, or the BW1356 I have in the attic installed? I think it takes different drive shafts though.
I have fixed another transfer case that someone tightened the drain plug too tight and cracked the case. I used JB weld on it and it held.
I did have to drain it. Then take brake cleaner and clean it off, and then I took a small triangle file and opened the crack up(yes, made it look worse). It's just like body work, or patching concrete or drywall. You need some area for the JB weld to bite into and hold. Veeing the crack out gives it more area to hang on.
In your situation though, I guess you need to open it up, fill it in, and after it gets hard, run a tap into the threads to clean out any jb weld in the threads.
I think I'll continue it, and do what I did with my steering gear replacement. Where I put the topic in and then make it seperate from the other stuff I do.
