changed the atf in the trans and the transfer case i used mobil 1 atf my question is now the drain plug on the trans is leaking, should i have put teflon tape on the threads or is there something better i should use
From: I'm lost somewhere in NJ -- can someone please find me?!?!?!?
I had a drain plug on a Camaro that liked to leak... don't know why it happened, but I found a simple solution. The parts store sold washers specifically designed for drain plugs. Changed the washer with every oil change (too cheap not to). Never had a problem since.
I can't explain why yours is leaking -- perhaps you didn't clean well in the area the bolts sits and some dust/dirt is keeping it from sealing well, maybe it's not on tight enough (Forty's warning still applies), or maybe the surface is not perfectly straight/level (something banged against it down there).
I suggest trying the washer. Figure out some way to hook up your wet/dry vac to the tranny dip stick (do sticks have them like the autos?). Have a friend turn the vaccum on while you are under the truck, and loosen the bolt/plug. Have something underneath to catch the mess in case the vaccum can't put enough back pressure on the fluid to keep it from evacuating. Stick your finger over the hole while you use the other hand to prepare the washer/plug. Reinstall it with the washer, see no more leaks, come back & say thanks. Don't forget to turn the vaccum off...
thanks i will try the washer idea. no dipstick on manual trans. thanks for the warning i was woried about geting it to tight
i will let you know weather it works
well i replased the rubber o ring; it looked fine but i realy do not want it to leak again i also raped the threads in teflon tape. so far not a drop
