Mirrors

Hi guys, my truck is an 82 with the xls package, I'm not sure if it has stock mirrors, however, they are the tiniest, most useless mirrors ever fitted to a vehicle, they don't fold and you cant see a thing out of them! Anyways, after lots of off roading, and the inability to fold, my passenger side mirror has ripped off and the drivers side is to damaged to stay in one place, so time for upgrades!

Zoom in on this picture and get a load of how ridiculous these mirrors are! I'd like to fit something to the truck that is bigger, and can fold. Current mirrors are mounted with two bolts. I was wondering if mirrors like the ones that come on the 92-96 trucks like the one pictured below could fit? Do you guys have any suggestions?

My old 96 had these folding mirrors. I'm not sure if I'd like to fit an old style folding mirror as i know they are mounted in two places to the door and I do not really want to drill holes in it.

I would go with the 92-96 mirrors personally.

IMO, they look good, they fold away, and provide enough mirror to see out of. If you're not doing towing...I think they'll be the best way to go.

Plus, they'll bolt right up to the holes that are already there.

I prefer the larger mirrors that set/stick out a little further - but that would mean drilling some holes in your door panel.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that style of mirror will use the same holes up near the window and only require new holes where the bottom of the bracket attaches. I just bought a new pair of that style of mirror for my '97 and it came with "nuts" for the bottom mounting points that just go in from the outside. If you are picking morrors out of a junk yard you probably won't be able to get / reuse those threaded inserts. Not sure what the best alternative would be, but worst-case you take the door panel off and put nuts inside the door.

Just ordered a set, in black, off of rock auto! Should be here in a few days. I called my local JY, they wanted 75 bucks for a pair, LMC wanted about 100, local parts store was 40 a piece, similar prices on craigslist, rockauto was 18 bucks a piece

They are not oem, but should do nicely for what I use the truck for. I'll post pics after they are installed

Alright guys, so the mirrors came in today, turns out they are not a direct bolt in. As you can see, the new mirrors have a much bigger area they need to mount to, as well as the one inside of the door. I am going to probably end up thru bolting them to the door, and having to drill one new hole, as well as enlarge the other current hole to get the internal mount through

Before you cut or drill, make sure that internal bracket clears the window track and any internal structural items. Good luck.

It makes it I was able to use the factory front mounting hole, enlarge the hole for the support arm, then through bolt the other mounting hole. Finding the right spot for the internal arm, took a few test drill holes, third time was the charm Sadly, I snapped the support arm for the passenger side mirror by accident, I'll either bond it back together tomorrow or just order another mirror for 18 bucks. Driver side came out great and is very sturdy.

I've also came to the conclusion that I should get some new doors for this truck, the window tracks are just toast, so whenever that happens, I'll get a set from a 93-96 and then the mirrors will just bolt right up Over all I am happy that I can see a lot more, that I can fold them in when I go through the woods, and that the black matches the bumper and grill!
