I forget which sensors it uses, but it knows if there's no gas flow. It fixes the fan issue to leave it plugged in, but the CEL issue is related to gas actually flowing when the EGR is commanded open.

It monitors the IAT2 temp probe and when the PCM commands the EGR valve to open and it doesn't get the expected response from the IAT2 sensor ( increase in intake air temperature ). it will throw a code.
