starting issue

In my van, I've recently been having trouble with it cranking slowly and thus being hard to start. Today I borrowed a battery tester, and my batteries tested 945 and 800 CCA separately, but together only 1300 when connected in the truck measured from the right battery, or 1100 together when measured from the left battery. Am I right in thinking that cables are probably my issue, or is a battery tester just going to be thrown off for testing that way...

Also, I was looking up starters at O'Reillys, and they have starters listed for our rigs with three different tooth counts on the gear that engages the flex plate... Do they all interchange, or how do I find which one fits before I take mine out of the vehicle?

At this point I'm thinking probably new cables to solve my issue, then possibly a starter if that's not enough.
As of right now it cranks as slow as about 4 cylinders up per second, or one revolution per second when it's being slow. Usually the second or third try is a little faster and it comes to life

josh I picked up the rebuilt starter that has the open gear style nose, like a power stroke, but is for the pre 95 7.3 they claim to have a higher starting rpm than the original ford type starter, got mine at Orielys works awesome.

i just got the new positive cable installed a few minutes ago, cleaned all the connections, and it cranked just like it did yesterday at its worst. the old cable was worse than i realized with plenty of open areas where insulation belonged, and plenty of corrosion even under the new cracks in the insulation. definitely bad!
so its a starter that i need now. i was talking with a friend at a local parts store yesterday while buying the cable, and he recomended the nippon-denso style starter with the offset gear reduction, as opposed to the OE style in line unit. all i'm seeing online is that they're better, giving more torque and that results in faster cranking. sounds like a win to me. the only trouble is that oreilly doesn't carry them and the store that does closed a couple hours ago. tomorrow it is - or else i ride a bicycle to work on monday.
hopefully this pic of the starter i'm looking at will work... http://cds.activant.com/C2C/C01/29/836/335354732.jpg
compared to the OEM misubishi-style starter you see here http://cds.activant.com/C2C/C01/34/836/558632967.jpg
FWIW, the mitsubishi style are offered in both open nose and cone nose varieties

y'all agree that the one i'm looking at is better?

I've never seen one of the inline-style starters on any of the four 7.3's my family owns -- they all came with the gear-reduction units.

Interesting. From what I've read the inline ones use planetary gear reduction, but still offer less torque than the offset gear reduction units.

When I put the 7.3 in my '85 I almost used the starter out of the 6.9 because I paid over $200 for it and didn't have many hours on it.

But the nose-less planetary gear reduction that came with the IDI was fresh too so for giggles I tried it out. That thing turns over like no IDI I've ever had!!! When I first started the 7.3 I didn't glow the plugs because I figured I needed to prime the system first, just installed engine, fuel filter, etc.
It spun so fast it fired right off with no GPs! And my batteries are getting old to boot. So I'm sold.

Make sure you don't get it though, I'm full of crap.

The new picture posting procedure here is a joke, but newer is always better right?

Ignore where I erroneously called it a straight drive, Jared edified me by explaining it is a planetary gear reduction:

Well I ended up getting my original style of starter because Napa refused to take my old starter as a core on one that looked different. But the style I was looking at was rated 2.5kw vs the one I got is rated 3.0kw, so it makes more power than the one I intended.
At the end of the day, the truck starts better than it has in months.
