Which batteries and starter?
Which batteries and starter?
My truck is in need of batteries so thought that I would get some input. Replaced the batteries around 6 years ago with some powermaster 850ccs. They have done great until this years cold snap. Also replaced the starter sometime after. Got one from advanced auto with a lifetime replacement warranty. It went bad after the local advanced closed up shop. Had to go close to 40 miles away to get it replaced! I would rather just get another when I do get one. Not much to choose from locally. Got a carquest, napa and oriely's. I don't really go in the oriely's much, bunch of not sure and can have it tomorrow EVERY time I go in there. And they are not very customer supportive either. The carquest does carry interstate batteries.
Get interstate mega Tron plus, previous owner of my truck bought them 7 years ago and there still starting my truck no problem, they also had a draw on them when the truck was shut off for an unknown anount of years before I bought it, and they've been drained completely dead around ten times by myself ( took a day to drain one using it on a electronic log splitter fir a day,
They still hold a charge all through the Canadian winter

Thanks guys. I read a post that someone had on here where he had interstate batteries with 1100 cca and a starter that he got from oriely's that was from a powerstroke but fitted for the idi. Open face is what I call them. It supposedly spins faster. If I remember correctly. I've searched for it, but can't find it.
That's a good question, I don't know where to get them, hopefully someone here can chime in with the info, but I'm sold on them! My 7.3 came with one, when I put it (the 7.3) in my truck I almost used my old starter thinking the gear reduction would be better than the straight drive, but fortunately I tried the other, the truck turns over like no IDI I've ever had!
I'm almost positive that he said he got it from oriely's. I would get one from there if I had a part number. I know the 94 powerstroke stater will not work on the 94 idi because advanced auto give me one of them for my truck. I installed it thinking it was just a gear reduction starter. It wouldn't even touch the flywheel. Live and learn. When they ask if it's a 94 with a turbo, it's just better to say that it's a 93!
Following this one.... Will a 2000's PS starter fit our idi's?... Just kind of curious because I am needing to replace mine here shortly, and some of the parts houses list a open or a closed "face" with 10-13 teeth options.. Anyway case in point I'll be following lol

When you do find your batteries, check Advance, Autozone, and the rest of the lot for coupon codes, buy it online and pick up in store. I bought a AGM battery for my VW diesel for 40% off online and picked it up at the local store the next morning and installed it in the lot. There's a huge difference in cranking speed and money in my pocket...for the IDI.
I originally posted this in an incorrect thread. Here it is where it's supposed to be and more info from Jared:
I found quite a few open-faced gear reduction starter auctions on ebay, here's one:
New Ford 7 3 Diesel Starter Power Stroke High Torque 6 9 7 3IDI 1985 94 | eBay
But only one open face direct drive like mine and it's used. Looks pretty clean though, might be worth it:
Ford 6 9 7 3 Diesel Starter Nearly New 1993 Automatic 2 Wheel Drive F350 | eBay

That isn't direct drive, that's a Mitsu gear reduction unit. There is a planetary style reduction gear between the actual motor and drive gear. The one on my truck right now is the open nose style, the one I just fixed is the closed nose type.
The top one I believe is usually referred to as the Nippondenso style. The ones for autos fit the auto and manual trucks with a single mass flywheel, the ones advertised as being for manual only fit with a dual mass flywheel.

I'm not sure about that.
Last year, I replaced the clutch in my current truck with a SMF kit I had on junker rig. I know the clutch that came off this truck was a dual-mass one, and the one that went on was single-mass. And I didn't change the starter. And it's worked just fine for the last year.

My 2 cents.
Get the highest cca possible for the money. Not all the batteries for your truck will have the same amount. The way I see it the higher the cranking amps the easier it will be for the batteries to crank you engine. The easier it is for them to crank the truck the less wear and tear on the batteries so to speak and the longer they will last. 850cca factory
I have to agree they are not as good as Interstate, Napa or some of the more expensive batteries. Had a couple of Napa batteries and they lasted longer than the warranty. Autozone and Advance batteries rarely do. This is one of those you get what you pay for things.
I'm kinda hard on my batteries. With that in mind I get mine from Auto Zone or Advance and get the ones with the best warranty. They never make it. I take them back and get a new set usually for free or very little. Sometimes i even take them back again and get them prorated and get another set for half price.

I've got 2x Car Quest 1100CCA batteries. Big suckers.
On the other hand, my spare truck had smaller, cheaper Exide batteries which are about half the size. Still started it right up... but if I had to crank and crank, about 20s of cranking before it starts slowing down.
My good batteries... several minutes of cranking at least.
Starter from O'reilly's Part # 19418 no nose cone, (looks like a power stroke starter) but is for iDi, is remand by Ultima mine works awesome. get the most cca's you can fit under the hood, do not get agm type (aqueous glass mat) batt's they will not work with out installing all new charging system, as agm need very specific voltage charging. and do not get deep cycle batt's as high current draw during starting warp's the plates..
