Trans temps abnormally high for non-towing... intermittent
Hey guys,
Been awhile. Just been driving my truck and not doing much in the way of mods.
I have a trucool installed for the trans and normally in the summer I see about 160deg in mixed driving. I was a bit surprised yesterday after a few miles down the road that it was up to 190deg! Didn't get much worse, and the gauge (EV2) behaved rather normal (not jumping around like my old EV did before I replaced it).
After driving I let it idle for a bit to keep things moving and possibly cool down some. Then after about 10min I shut off the engine, trans temps still near 190, and then restarted after about 20min. After this the gauge indicated 130deg.
From past experience I recall trans temp holding heat much longer than that. It makes me suspect the gauge/sensor ... but still gives me concern as we're going on a trip with some tough mountain pulls in a few weeks.
In addition I have a dieselsite bypass filter as well. Thought that something could have gotten clogged in all my cooler and filter plumbing, but the "quick" drop in temp makes me wonder about the gauge or sensor.
Curious what ya'll think ...
I would suspect the gauge/sender as well, however there is nothing wrong with ~190* if that is the actual temp. Design operating temp. is 180*. I just installed a 6.0 cooler and Derale thermostat and my trans runs right at 185* in 100* weather unloaded.
Thanks guys. I've read some of Mark K's posts and see that I've got plenty of "headroom" if that's really the temp in my tranny but it's a bit unnerving as it's been tracking much lower.
I think I'm going to get a ScanGuage II and compare. I've had a couple issues with my ISSPROs and would like an alternate way to monitor the engine/trans.
watch for crimped or restricted lines, i had a superduty come in and just under the radiator the return line was crimped almost to the point its was not letting and fluid flow, double check that, they dont leave ya much room for adding aux coolers or replacing the lines.
I had this happen to me but in 20 degree weather my trans with a 6.0 28 row cooler was up to 180, unloaded. I called bob at diesel site and he had me check the bypass line on the side of the trans and it was indeed stuck closed so it was bypassing trans fluid out and back into the trans, not into the cooler. Might be something to look at if the scangauge is reading what your isspro is reading. Also a small side note with the scangauge you may read 10 degrees warmer than your isspro. I have both ev2 gauges and a scangauge II.

Hey guys,
A month later and I still haven't seen the same behavior. I towed for about 500+ miles up to VA and back and everything was "fine." BTW - AJ thanks for the tip on the temp difference, I did see that the SGII was reading higher than my EV2 gauge so happy to hear it's normal.
If it pops up again I'll update ya'll...
