hey anyone know how hot the tanny on a 94 explorer will get? i have an auto trans and want to add a trans temp gauge. i do some towing sometmes and go off road every now and then. i would like to know (by the gauge) how hot the trans is getting. but i am asking you folks cause i dont know if i can use a regular temp gauge for this or i have to buy a trans temp gauge, lol even though i am hgaving trouble finding one..
The range for a typical transmission fluid temp gauge is 100-250. Any gauge that covers this range will work although Jegs and Summit have several that actually say "TRANS" on the face.
so i can go to auto zone and but a regular temp gauge to do this? only reason i ask is cause it seems cheaper for the gauge..trans temp gauges run about 40-70 and regular temp gauges run 20-40... also does it make a diffrence that i have a tranny cooler? will that keep it more in the range of a regular temp gauge?
My guess is that the trans temp gauge may come with some extra fittings for the install; the gauge itself should not be drastically different (or more expensive) than a water temp gauge. The fact that you have a cooler will probably make the install easier; otherwise you have to drill a hole in your transmission pan and install an adapter for the sensor. With the cooler, you can use a T-fitting to accomodate the sensor. Find out if you can get a look at the respective installation instructions to see which gauge will be easier to install; you might find out that the extra money is worth it. Incidently, the 2 1/16" Auto Meter "Sport Comp" (excellent quality) temp gauges are $40 from Jegs or Summit; water, oil or trans are all the same price.
