Carter YF

I have a 68 with the 170 6 cyl.. The old Carter YF is shot. Needs throttle shaft bushings & some linkage pieces. Where do you find a rebuild or is there a carb that I could replace it with Ford, Holley, etc.?

I don't know how it works with the 170, but I've heard a lot of good things about the Autolite / Motorcraft 2 bbl. I'm pretty sure that is what was stock in my '85 F-250 (351W) and it's what I put back in my Bronco (302). Some friends from a 4WD club say it's one of few carbs they will use for rock crawling because it isn't affected by weird angles and jolts as much as other carbs (however, they do say a lot, much of which is true, so I'm not sure about this). I will say I've liked mine.

But I don't know anything bad about the Carter YF either. So unless you have a reason to move away from it I'd probably just rebuild what you have. I'm not sure where you could get a rebuild kit, but I'd start with NAPA or with one of the on-line Bronco shops like Jeff's Bronco Graveyard or Wild Horses.

Holley 1940 is the factory replacement carb for the 170ci. Autolite 1101 is another option. If buying a replacement Carter YF, shop carefully, as these were used on various engines including the 300 I6 and differ in throttle bore/mounting bolt pattern. The repair kit for them is available for about $14 at RockAuto.

Thanks for the replies. Finding a rebuild kit is no problem but, my carb. has very worn throttle shaft bushings & some stripped screws by po. Kind of have to stick with the 1bbl. 170 ford intake is part of the head. Kind of hard to modify. May look for a holley or autolite replacement. Was hoping I could score a reman from a parts house.

I'd think that throttle shaft bushings would be included in a rebuild kit. It's really common for those to wear. Stripped threads could be a bigger issue though.

"...is there a carb that I could replace it with..."
Yes.
what is yer final goal? Replicate what U have? High mpg? Bump up low rex hp/tq?
The answ to that Q will help folks locate an answ 4 U.

"...have to stick with the 1bbl...."
not really. I am due to interest in low rev tq. There are adapters to mount 2V carbs, efi and NO bronks, turbos, and machining the log to 'direct mount' 4V carbs.

Just a replacement would be fine. Some modification would be fine also. Just not looking to break the bank. Thanks
