am getting ready to rebuild the carter 1v on my 68 f100, and i am in need of any information, mainly, what little things to watch out for as i am doing it. anything that has bitten others, that i should be on the look out for. any and all information, no matter how trivial, will GREATLY be accepted, and APPRECIATED i capitolize those to stress, how thankful i will be for the wealth of knowledge this site has shown me so far with this old girl, and for information, i have not yet recieved.
thanks
chad
(sorry if that is over the top)(by just a little bit)(wait, will someone get me a butter knife, i think i need to spread it a little bit more)
Hiya Chad - carter made about as many carberators as little liver pills - a little more info would be useful.
I just replaced the Carter 1bbl on my 300, found a factory rebuilt on an auction site and for $47 - bolt up set-up and go. If you have all the parts and pieces and they fit together well, a rebuild kit should do.
I had a good bit of wear around the throttle shaft of my original and most good factory rebuilds address this issue. And a piece of the choke linkage was also missing on the original carb - it's winter and 8 inches of snow outside - I luv working chokes!
There were three different carbs used that year on the 300-6, the most common being the Ford model 1. The kit for that one is kinda hard to get, but most Parts Plus stores (a network of independant stores in most states) can get them easier than the big chain stores. There were also the Autolite 1100 and the Carter. I have heard of there being a Holley carb that year too, but I have never seen one.
The Ford carb is EASY to rebuild, as are most carbs. Just follow the instructions in the kit, and you should be good to go. For the most part, if you can remove the carb from the truck, then you have the skills to rebuild it.
