when i acceralate im blowing black smoke until i hit about 10PSI of boost.
this has just started in the last 3-4 weeks. im looking for some suggestions on what i need to check? i just changed the oil and filters(OEM) and ICP and pig tail.
truck info is in my signature. any and all comments welcome.
What is the EBP psi and VGT% during the acceleration?
Josh
EBP is inferd as it is a 03 engine. im certain there is a exhaust leak because i can smell it at start up in the cab. but not a big leak
VGT looks normal during acceleration but as you know it is a reported value not a commanded value. i can hear the exhaust sound change at idle when the vains
sweep from 85 to 14.
other than removing the turbo is there any other way to check operation?
and as suggested by egreeg57 i will check my egr valve
My failed EGR valve caused massive black smoke till I got to 10-12 PSI / 45-50 MPH and then eased off. I was new to the truck and deisels and it scared the living crap out of me. The EGR that was removed was badly coked up and INOP. The repair (new valve + labor) was about $350.00 at the time, If I remember correctly.
I may be wrong, but for the 15-20 minutes to pull, clean, inspect it, and put it back in, its worth a look I think.
so i just wanted to give a up date on this. I pulled my egr valve checked and cleaned it. It didnt look to bad. got a reman up pipe form josh and exhaust manifold gaskets from riff raff.
Spent last week end removing fender liners and exhaust manifolds. found I had a broken bolt in the passenger head #5 cyl. and got that extracted.
got the new gaskets and manifolds installed, worked my way up to the installing the up pipe. cleaned the vaines in the turbo, fought the exhaust leak at the mating connection on the turbo. finely got it all back together for the test drive just to find im still blowing black smoke
next step is to pressure test the CAC .
MAP tube and nipple into intake clean? IAT2 sensor cleaning? EBP tube cleaning and sensor? MAF sensor cleaning, IAT1 cleaning might also be necessary, I think your model may have this?
Also, after cleaning EGR, did you re-learn the EGR? Once you try all this, if still smoking, try unplugging EGR when the truck is off, see if that helps, if it does, could be a bad EGR valve too?
MAP hose and nipple checked today. i have the infered EBP . will check MAF which is also the IAT1.
EGR relearn? i haven't heard of that? please explain. i haven't totally ruled out the EGR valve its self
MAP tube and nipple into intake clean? IAT2 sensor cleaning?
That's what the problem was on my truck. It would belch out black smoke like yours until the turbo caught up in the higher RPMs. I found the MAP sensor nipple partially clogged on my truck. A WD-40 spray straw cleared the hole, I reset the KAM, and my truck drove night and day better. My mileage and power are up too.

i checked the map hose and nipple yesterday when installing the turbo
