classic intake leak points

Ok I'm pretty sure I have a leak somwhere on the intake. I'm getting a turbo whine and the thing won't boost past 21psi. Its not really affecting performance. But my mileage has dropped a bit lately. It is a 03 turbo and it has the newest flash that defers the exhaust backpressure sensor. I swear I read somwhere that the 03 turbo won't go past 22psi, is that true? I get a occasional p132b (once every 10k miles) but the truck runs like a top other then the dip in mpg. Other then the turbo boots are there other classic leak points? I noticed there is some blackish soot on the back side of the intake elbow on the throttle body. Can the elbow o ring leak out of no where?
Thanks in advance,
Unreal

I assure you that the 03 turbo will go WELL past 22 psi. That accursed intake elbow o-ring has given me fits for years. It usually oozes oil slime from the CCV, but not soot. The worst spot to loose boost is the blue elbow at the turbo, but the other boots and the intercooler can split just as easily. A smoke test is your best friend.

Are you sure you don't have a y-pipe leak?

I'm not sure at all that the Y-pipe isn't cracked. I can smell fumes like instantly when I start the truck to warm up. My wife smells and catchs everything if there was exhaust fumes in the cab she would start gaging. I'm newer to the diesel thing. So a exhaust leak can cause lower boost?

The elbow shaped boot at the turbo splits and fails on the under side, exactly where you CAN'T see it. I knew I had a leak, but I didn't know where. I checked all 4 boots, but I missed the split in the elbow because it felt smooth when I ran my hand under it. If I were you, I would take it off and inspect it.

I have since replaced all 4 with the Dieselsite boots and probably will not need to cange them for another 20 years.
