I own a 97' xcab 2wd ranger with the 4.0 and 5spd auto. The starter motor does not crank when attempting to start it. All the indicator lights come on fine, but the dome light dims when turning the ignition to the start position. I can here the fuel pump and the battery is putting out the proper voltage. It reminds me of a problem late 60's Mustangs had with neutral safety switches.
A friend mentioned that there is a switch or relay located in the passenger kick panel that may need to be reset. I did not find though. *note: the truck was backed up in our driveway, which is on an incline prior to this problem developing. Thank You for any suggestions.
P.S. while researching this site to help trouble shoot this I found the solution to the "door ajar"/domelight problem. Great site!
It is not uncommon to get enough power from the battery for lights, radio, etc but not enough to turn the starter which requires quite a lot of power. I would have the battery tested and if thats OK then check cables and connections. Glad to hear you found the door ajar fix.
Thanks for the quick reply....I did check the connections, but I believe the problem lies elsewhere. There is no juice to the starter solinoid, do you know if there is a circuit breaker of some sort past the ignition switch? Thanks
